We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmy Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emmy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started pursuing my art full time I completely dove in. I was either painting or planning projects for hours on end every single day. A few weeks in I hit a creative block and thought I might have exhausted my capabilities when I realized what had really happened; I triggered my burnout. After talking about what I was feeling with my partner and my therapist I came to the understanding that even if I am completely in love with the work I am doing, it is essential that I still take breaks and have an existence outside of work. I admittedly still catch myself over-working occasionally, especially when I’m feeling inspired, but I’ve gotten much better about managing my time. I also try to stay mindful of my limits and understanding what I can or can’t handle taking on.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One time at a market my friend described my work as “Prozac and its side effects” and that has really stuck. Since I’ve been in recovery and prioritizing my mental health, I’ve unlocked a style of creative expression that is more genuine and healing. Lately I’ve been painting nude portraits and exploring more textured art. I also do a lot of work in the Atlanta drag community, designing and creating garments, accessories, and props for performers. The largest lesson I’ve learned about finding success as an artist is that people can tell when your heart isn’t in what you’re making. When I try rushing through projects just to have something to sell, those pieces get no attention. When I get inspired and just let myself work on something naturally then people are drawn to it. Folks can feel when you love what you’re doing versus when you you don’t.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still learning about the city but I have a couple places that are my favorites. I’m in the West End so I love to start the day with a run to Finca to Filter for coffee and a treat. For a fun night out I know any show or event from the House of ALXNDR is guaranteed to be a great time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m not sure I would have ever found the courage to follow my passion without help from my partner Fitzgerald. Their endless and unwavering support and encouragement has given me the strength to completely open myself to my art. They always hype me up when I start a new piece and help me stay grounded when my social anxiety kicks in during markets. Fitz makes me feel like I’m the coolest person in the universe and I am in awe of how talented, creative, and loving they are.
