We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Magstadt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It has always been a dream of mine to build a business of my own. Every ounce of hard work I have put into it feels like it is going towards my future and the future of my family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I find that my inner creativity is a huge asset in the mortgage world. Finding creative solutions to consolidate credit and maximize spending power is something that comes naturally to me.
Not all borrowers fit into one box. You may be a 20 year veteran in the corporate world or you may be an entrepreneur selling products on TikTok. Either way, you deserve an equal opportunity at owning a home. For customers, navigating compliance laws can be overwhelming and brain numbing! That is why hiring someone who understands the laws and is able to implement a strategy to fit you into the right box is so important. This is where I shine. The golden rule I have always used in my salon is:
“God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth, therefore we should listen twice as much as we talk.” This is just as applicable in the mortgage business. While I am listening to your scenario, I am hatching a perfect plan to set you up for success. I know which lenders would fit and how to structure the loan to maximize your dollar.

I also have discovered that everyone, whether you own a multi million dollar company or are a cashier in the grocery store, wants someone who is honest when it comes to finances. Home buyers want to work with someone who shoots straight and has their best interests in mind. Making money is the benefit of doing a job well done. The joy and pleasure comes from doing the right thing.
My customers are not only First Time Home buyers but I work with seasoned savvy business men and women who want a solid person to handle their purchase transactions.
I have taken on the same mantra as I had in the salon. That is to take care of people, no matter who they are, and do right by them and the rest will follow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is such a diverse city.
There is shopping, theme parks, and many venues for concerts and sports events, but a dream weekend for me, begins with a brunch in downtown Alpharetta followed by an afternoon of shopping at local boutiques. Downtown Alpharetta and Halcyon both provide some great shops that are full of variety and character. To finish it off, you can end at trendy food joint or brewery. There are also a lot of green spaces and music to keep a festive atmosphere where you can hang out and talk over a drink or some ice cream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To start out, we have to go back to the beginning.
I went to beauty school right out of high school and started my work in a salon as a hairdresser. I loved the world I was in, but I found that my true passion was making people happy. I would see people come in with tons of stress and anxiety and after sitting in my chair for 30 minutes with a fresh cut, they would leave a new person.

After 20+ years of serving others in the salon, I developed allergies to the hair products and began my search for a career where I could continue to combine my love for helping others with my creativity. My husband had been in the finance world for many years and pitched the idea of becoming a mortgage broker. He said, “service is service.”
He shared the joys of helping first time home-buyers navigate one of the biggest purchases in their life and using my communication skills learned in the salon to help put people at ease through the process. His passion convinced me to study for the mortgage broker test and pursue this new career.
If I give anyone credit to my success, it would be my husband. He gave me the encouragement and motivation I needed to continue the pursuit, and the wealth of knowledge to help me through my first few transactions.
