We had the good fortune of connecting with Emery Gholston Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emery, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking can be disastrous or prosperous depending on the reward and goal. Our business started off as a part time means of making extra money until I was laid off from my job. My beautiful, loving and supporting wife encouraged me to concentrate on the business full time and everything will be fine. It was pretty scary not knowing what the outcome or the hurdles you come across when having a business. But with a strong support system at home and faith, blood, sweat and tears you can overcome anything.

Then Major Flavor Seasonings was born, a family owned and operated business with a quest to provide tasty, all natural gourmet seasonings and rubs made with premium ingredients. We started our business 4 years ago with 10 flavors and we now have 25 flavors with 5 salt free options. Each day we learn something new about having a business and about ourselves. We really have come a long way as a family and a business by learning and growing together, now that’s the American Dream. Thanks to the support of our customers, our business has grown and have a strong and positive presence in the community, that gives people hope and show them that owning a business is possible.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business offers 25 different flavors of all natural gourmet seasonings and rubs. It took a lot of trial and error to come up with the flavors with the right balanced flavor profiles to excites one’s palate. We take pride in our products and our brand with every detail from the names of the seasonings and rubs to the finished product. We understand that not everyone can be a chef, but we try to empower others with examples of dishes we prepare and suggestions we have to show them that they can too cook like a chef. I am so humbled and honored to be working with my loving wife and daughter to make this company a success. We work together as a well oiled machine to continue to learn from each other, push through obstacles as a team to put our brand out there. Everyone has heard about the “Golden Rule”, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That is very true, but I believe that we could do better than that so we use what I call the “Diamond Rule”, “treat others better than they would treat you”. Using that rule you’ll turn loyal customers into fans.

Of course there were some bumpy roads along the way, because that’s how life is and we were able to persevere. Some of the biggest challenges were:
1. Not having that guaranteed income coming in on a regular basis
2. Fear of failure
3. Fearing the unknown
4. Not being able to help provide for my family

But those challenges actually fueled me to push further and harder to the point that I couldn’t think about those challenges. To help decrease cost, we provide samples of our seasonings and rubs with a piece of bread instead of a protein while marketing our product. We provide our customers with an experience that they don’t receive at a big box store or large spice company. We treat people like family by listening to their needs and wants with care and help them in selecting the perfect blend or rub for their meal. Giving people something valuable as”time” and having patience with them when answering their questions, builds relationships and trust between you and the community.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
