We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Lockwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, why did you pursue a creative career?
Like most people, I had a dream. My dad always told me that I could do anything I put my mind to and I wanted that thing to be music.

Since a very young age, I’ve always been involved in the musical arts. I joined the choir in elementary school and far exceeded the expectations with that, participating in All-State Chorus, All-District Chorus, Literary Meet, ensembles, solo performances, private lessons, a cappella groups, and more. I always found myself wanting to be surrounded by music because it soothed my soul.

My most fond memory of knowing this was my calling was when I was performing at the annual All-State conference. Students from all over Georgia audition to be a part of this chorus and I had the opportunity to join them. Our choir director was so much fun and for our group, he had us hold hands and close our eyes as we sang this one song, and I’ll never forget: everyone was so in sync. I think I opened my eyes right at the climax of the piece and I knew that music was where I needed to be. The power it had in that one moment showed me that I wanted to create those experiences for others, so, that’s what I set out to do.

Now, I continue my musical endeavors, studying to be a Music Educator at Georgia State, and when I’m not in my books, I’m songwriting with my group NCEG, creating with my friends and/or clients, and gigging with my band “One More Song” on the weekends.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love that I’m a black woman, and that may seem cliche for some, but it’s so relevant. How many black women songwriters do you see/hear about? How many black songwriters do you hear about? This excites me the most because I can be an influence for other young black creatives wanting to pursue the music arts.

It wasn’t easy getting to where I am. There were lots of moments of doubt, people who wanted me to fail, and many days where I barely made rent, but I never stopped, and God always made a way for me. The ultimate goal was to keep going and that’s what I did/continue to do.

At the end of the day, if you really want something, you will make a way for it to come to fruition. Never stop believing in your dreams!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Creating itineraries is my thing, but for the sake of time, I will just make a list because Atlanta has so much to offer!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have been an instrumental part of my journey!

To my friends and family, thank you for always supporting me and believing in my gift. You never steer me in the wrong direction and you always tell me what’s up.

To my teachers, thank you for your patience and wisdom. Whether it was a science class or math, seeing your passion for it made me want to do the same for what I loved to do, and so, I carry those same principles.

To my dream team, thank you for bringing my vision to life and for being so supportive in the launch of my FIRST EP! I was truly amazed at the love that surrounded me and grateful for all your help.

Last but not least, I want to thank God for continuing to let me share my gift. You never fail to amaze me, you’re always there when I need you, and I know that the plans you have for me, are more than I can imagine.
