We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Right before I decided to start my business my daughter and I had just started renting a house. My ex and I were both making pretty decent money at our jobs. I had enough money saved up while still expecting my tax return money and he was up for a promotion at his job, and so we mutually decided that it was a good time to go ahead and take that step. I had been talking about it for a long time and already had the design for my business cards ready to go on Vistaprint, so I put in my two-weeks notice, ordered my cards, and set my business plans into motion.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have worked on the food service industry cooking professionally for over ten years. Throughout that time, I have gained so much knowledge and experience from the different kitchens I have worked in, and I found a passion for making beautiful dishes that I never knew I had. At my last job I was working at Mimi’s Cafe as a line cook, making beautiful dishes for people every day. It was never a chore for me, I really enjoyed my work and I was good at it. Quitting my last job was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, especially knowing that I had a daughter to take care of. I made the decision to start my business in March (2023) and I know that if I wouldn’t have taken that risk, Sweet Sage Confections would never have come to be. Since then, I’ve enrolled back in school full-time, I work from home, and I can spend my days with my daughter doing what I love. Everything happens for a reason, and everything happened when it’s supposed to happen. I know that from experience, just from living my life (which is a testimony in itself!) so now I live by those phrases. We may not know the reason when we’re going through whatever it is we’re going through, but God always knows the bigger picture. I’ve learned as long as I really trust in Him, allowing God to let things happen-or NOT happen-will make room in our lives for something better.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God first. My family, especially my daughter, Sage.
Antonio Dupree. Even though we aren’t together anymore, he is the one that believed in my dream and pushed me to start Sweet Sage Confections and I will always love him for that.
