We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboni Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eboni, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have always been fearless even while hiding low-self esteem and depression. I am a natural born rebel and I march to the beat of my own drummer. This attitude is the only way I am pulling off running and working a cleaning business, pushing a rap career, and excelling in comedy all at the same darn time. Risk has always been necessary for me as I have held onto so many what-ifs that I have to just try things. I already got enough “what-ifs” weighing me down. My central goal is to do any and everything I want to do, and that happens to include being a local rap artist who also tells jokes. In the music industry especially, I find it hard to gain respect for my talent since I’m making people laugh and it seems I am better at that. But I understand that I have to be the first person to believe in myself, then persevere. This is why I make a great risk-taker, so I keep taking them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My stage name is Black Bette. I’m a rapper. I am proud of myself for what I have accomplished in music but my mission is not near complete. I love to write, which is probably my biggest strength, yet I have been writing songs since I was a pre-teen and singing since I was a kid. I have a unique voice and I love to sing, yet I don’t necessarily enjoy hearing myself. It’s a juxtaposition I struggle with yet I can’t resist my passion for creating music. I began telling jokes to bring awareness to my music, But my jokes have brought me more supporters than my music has. I am not discouraged by this. I just keep working. I do live stand-up at open mics in Charleston, SC and I continue to write and record rap songs. It has been extremely discouraging working in the entertainment industry as it is dominated by men. I have endured my share of pitfalls. However, I credit my ability to weather the storms to owning and working my company, Eboni Solutions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend visited me in Charleston, I would start by taking them about 45 minutes out of Charleston to Moncks Corner, SC. I would introduce them to the beauty of this quaint town over a nature walk and a game of tennis. I would introduce them to the night life out there where they could enjoy some fantastic cuisine. One of my favorite spots out there is Caribbean Delight which serves authentic Jamaican food. When we return to Charleston, I would take my buddy to the Market downtown, just because it would be a shame to come to Charleston not to go to the market. I would want them to see the Old Slave Mart Museum too. If the weather permits I would take my friend to a couple of the beaches in Charleston. Since it’s a week long trip, that leave plenty of time for the night life at local comedy clubs and bars. There’s plenty to do in ‘de Chuck.’

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my story to my ex-coworker and present friend, Don Hammond, whose love, motivation, and character has inspired me to want to be a better person.
