We had the good fortune of connecting with Dru Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dru, how do you think about risk?
In the entrepreneurial world, failure is expected; the bounce back from that failure is what creates successful entrepreneurship.

Every factor incorporated in building a business is accompanied by RISK and is usually neutralized with the knowledge of past failures.

This is why risks are beneficial, they allow for creativity and innovation. They open up space for new ventures and ways to expand your initial business goal.

However, risks should be analyzed. As I grew my business and added new services, I quickly realized the consequences should not out weigh the benefits.

The biggest risks taken in building Drubelle Visuals, was establishing a smooth booking service and policies that please both my customers and my personal life. I learned very quickly that booking services definitely take a lot of pressure off by organizing clergy work and finances; that sometimes gets swept under the rug if I became too busy during the week. Before, I would collect orders and payments through social media platforms or easy app/cellphone methods, which was fast but not always very profitable.

When I finalized my new booking service and policies, I noticed some clients would see the process and back out of completing their booking. At first I started to panic, I thought maybe I had made things too complicated. It became obvious that this was a risk that caused my business to slow down and I began to contemplate whether or not I should revert to my old booking ways. But I soon realized the completed bookings that were coming in, were well planned, organized and more profitable.

After 3 weeks, I noticed less bookings but higher profits than before using the platform. Which also benefited me personally, I was able to practice my craft more loosely, I prevented a lot of work overlapping and made more time for MYSELF to grow as well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Drubelle Visuals was created out of a strong love for technology and design. By middle school, I became very interested in coding and creating content, whether it was for class (so that I could have the best looking project of course) or by digitizing my eye for design with the (then very new) MySpace platform. Suddenly, I became obsessed with coding and social design. I spent 12hrs on a Friday learning, coding and designing the best page I could. I woke up the next day and noticed it attracted attention from my peers. Before I knew it, I was in the business of creating MySpace and Tumblr pages. By high school, my love for digital art expanded to my high school’s yearbook and broadcasting. And By college, and now in my career in education, I began to freelance with educational and advocacy programs to design eye catching marketing content to spread the work being done in the community.

In 2019, I decided to put a true name on my craft and expanded my services and clientele to create my dream career. I invested time, money and tears into to self-teaching myself difficult programs to ensure that I was creating quality and versatile work for my clients. I began to network and build personal and professional relationships with new and returning clients. This year has been great for business expansion and I can finally see my business reaching closer to my dreams.
