We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Mora Pressley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Mora, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business, AROM Educational Consulting, LLC, was a decision born out of a combination of professional experience, personal passion, and a deep desire to effect positive change in the education system.
As a Black woman, I have encountered various challenges and triumphs that have shaped my perspective and reinforced my commitment to advocacy and equity in education. As a special educator, I’ve seen firsthand the disparities and systemic issues that affect marginalized communities, particularly Black students. I realized that while I was making an impact in my classroom, there was a greater need to influence the broader educational landscape. I wanted to create a platform where I could support educators, schools, and districts in developing inclusive practices that promote equity and excellence for all students.
The idea of becoming a Educational Consultant was driven by my desire to share my expertise and provide tailored support to educational institutions. AROM Educational Consulting, LLC allows me to offer professional development, strategic planning, and capacity-building services to educators and administrators. I believe that by empowering educators with the right tools and knowledge, we can create environments where all students thrive.
Additionally, being a mother has profoundly influenced my approach to education and consulting. I understand the importance of advocating for every child’s right to quality education and the critical role that educators play in shaping their futures. My son’s experiences have further motivated me to push for systemic changes that ensure equity and access for all students, regardless of their background.
Furthermore, my recent role as the manager of the California Black Educator Initiative for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards aligns with my mission to support and elevate Black educators. This initiative aims to recruit 900 Black educators across California to pursue National Board Certification, with a focus on enhancing their professional growth and ensuring their success in the field. My involvement in this initiative reinforces my commitment to creating pathways for Black educators to excel and lead.
In essence, starting AROM Educational Consulting, LLC was a strategic move to combine my professional skills, personal experiences, and passion for advocacy into a business that drives meaningful change in education. It is my way of contributing to a more equitable and just education system, one that values and uplifts every student and educator.
