We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Monica Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Monica, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
All ideas for my business came from my personal experiences as a Black woman professor. When there wasn’t a tool to assess my teaching equitably, I created it. When people contacted me on Twitter about their concerns with the workplace, I created my “Stop Playing Diversity” brand. I feel the needs of people and create the services and resources I want and need.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not from Atlanta, but when I visit I love downtown. Centennial Olympic Park reminds me of my college days at Spelman and how the city transformed for the 1996 Olympics. The Varsity is a favorite along with the numerous restaurants in the ever-growing downtown area. Atlanta is a gorgeous city that is worth exploring from every angle. Start driving, stop, talk to the friendly people in the city, and you will have a phenomenal time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would be nothing without my parents. They instilled values in me that have allowed me to knock down doors and help others be brave as they do the same. When I doubted myself, they pushed me to move beyond what my eyes could see. Although my father has passed, his words ring true. In 2018, I wrote many of the lessons he shared with me in a book about excellence (available on Amazon). I wanted to write words from him so others who never met him could be impacted by his words as I was. Our words are seeds that will live long after our earthly body has deteriorated.
