Meet Dr. Melissa D. Hill | Transition Coach & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Melissa D. Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Melissa D., do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I rarely think in terms of giving up. I think in terms of P1VOT.
Most people believe they have only two options when facing challenges: keep going or quit. In my experience, there is a third option. Pivot.
Throughout my life and career, the greatest breakthroughs didn’t come from stubbornly forcing the same strategy. They came from adjusting my position while remaining committed to my purpose.
Life transitions are inevitable. Whether they involve identity, career, finances, relationships, health, purpose, or personal growth, every person will encounter moments that require them to adapt and reposition themselves. My mission is to help people navigate those transitions with clarity and confidence.
When I face setbacks or uncertainty, I ask myself a simple question: Is the vision still worth pursuing? If the answer is yes, I don’t give up. I PIVOT. I reassess, realign, and move forward with a new perspective. Many people abandon their dreams because they mistake obstacles for stop signs. More often than not, obstacles are invitations to change your approach, not your destination.
I’ve found that the most powerful transformations don’t happen because someone quit or because they blindly pushed ahead. They happen because they made one intentional decision (pivot) that changed their position and ultimately changed their future.

What should our readers know about your business?
At the heart of my work, I help people navigate transitions.
Many people know me through MDH Mortgage, where I help individuals and families achieve homeownership. Over the years, however, I realized that buying a home is rarely just a financial transaction. More often, it represents a significant life transition. People are getting married, starting families, changing careers, relocating, rebuilding after setbacks, or stepping into a new chapter of life.
As I worked with clients, I began to notice a pattern. The challenges they faced were often bigger than the mortgage itself. They were navigating uncertainty, identity shifts, career decisions, and questions about their future. That realization inspired me to develop P1VOT, a coaching framework centered on Positioning Individuals for Vision, Opportunity, and Transformation.
My perspective is also shaped by an unlikely background. Before entering the mortgage industry, I was a regulatory chemist. Looking back, I realize I’ve spent my entire career studying transformation, first in a laboratory and now in people’s lives.
What sets me apart is my belief that major life decisions rarely exist in isolation. A career change affects finances. Financial decisions affect lifestyle. Lifestyle changes affect identity, relationships, and future opportunities. Too often, these challenges are addressed separately when they are actually interconnected.
As both a independent mortgage broker and an ICF-certified transition coach, I have the unique opportunity to work with people at the intersection of some of life’s biggest transitions. I often describe my approach as helping people align their person, profession, and property. Whether someone is purchasing a home, changing careers, starting a business, or redefining their future, my goal is to help them make decisions that support the whole person rather than solving only one piece of the puzzle. I don’t simply focus on transactions or the transition. I focus on the overall transformation of the individual.
One decision begins every transformation. I’ve learned that one conversation, one opportunity, one act of faith, or one shift in perspective can completely change a person’s position in life.
My journey certainly wasn’t easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve experienced setbacks, disappointments, uncertainty, and moments when the path forward wasn’t clear. What helped me overcome those challenges was learning to remain committed to the vision while being flexible with the path. Some of my greatest breakthroughs came after I was willing to pivot.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that success is not about avoiding change. It’s about learning how to navigate it. The people who thrive are often not the strongest or smartest. They are the ones willing to adapt, learn, and keep moving forward.
What I want people to know about my brand is simple: I help people make confident decisions during uncertain times. Whether the transition is personal, professional, or financial, my goal is to provide the guidance, strategy, and support needed to move forward with purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d probably warn them to come hungry because Atlanta’s food scene alone could fill the entire itinerary.
We’d start the mornings exploring some of my favorite breakfast spots. Depending on the day, that might mean breakfast at Huskers Café in Stone Mountain, Scrumdiddlyumptious in Lawrenceville, or Milk & Honey in College Park. Each offers a different vibe, but all deliver great food and a true taste of Atlanta’s diverse culture.
For lunch and dinner, we’d take a culinary tour across the metro area. Rreal Tacos is always a favorite and has several convenient locations. We’d make a stop at Fat Boiz in Stockbridge for comfort food, enjoy the atmosphere at Parkside District in Lawrenceville, and spend an evening at Brookwood Grill in Roswell. For Southern and coastal flavors, Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar would be a must. We’d also venture to Douglasville for Gumbeaux’s, one of my favorite spots for Cajun cuisine.
Between meals, we’d explore some of Atlanta’s shopping destinations. Atlantic Station is a great place to spend an afternoon because it combines shopping, dining, and entertainment in a walkable setting. We’d also make time for Perimeter Mall and explore some of the unique local shops and boutiques throughout the metro area. One of the things I love about Atlanta is that you can find everything from major retailers to locally owned businesses, all reflecting the city’s entrepreneurial spirit and diversity.
Of course, Atlanta is much more than great food and shopping. We’d spend time enjoying some of the area’s beautiful outdoor spaces, including Piedmont Park, Stone Mountain Park, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Each offers a different experience and highlights the natural beauty that often surprises first-time visitors.
No visit to Atlanta would be complete without experiencing the city’s sports culture. Depending on the season, we’d catch a game featuring one of Atlanta’s professional teams. Whether it’s the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, Atlanta United FC, or the Atlanta Dream, there’s something special about experiencing the energy of Atlanta fans cheering on their hometown teams.
What I love most about Atlanta is its diversity. In a single week, you can experience incredible food, world-class sports, vibrant shopping districts, beautiful parks, and communities that represent cultures from around the world. It’s a city that continues to grow and evolve while maintaining the Southern hospitality and entrepreneurial spirit that make it such a special place to call home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If I had to dedicate my shoutout, it would be to the many people, experiences, and moments that taught me the power of transformation.
First and foremost, I thank Jesus Christ for guiding my journey, especially during seasons when the path forward wasn’t clear. Some of my greatest lessons came not from success, but from transitions, setbacks, and moments that required me to trust the process.
Of course, I am grateful for the mentors, clients, colleagues, family members, and friends who challenged me to become the best version of myself. Yet, ironically, some of my greatest teachers were people who never realized the impact they had on me. Some inspired me through their encouragement, while others inspired me through the obstacles they placed in my path. Both taught me valuable lessons about resilience, perspective, and perseverance.
If there is one group that deserves special recognition, it is the individuals I have the privilege of serving every day. The career changers searching for their next chapter, aspiring entrepreneurs pursuing a vision, first-time homebuyers building a foundation for their future, and those courageously reinventing themselves. Their determination continually reminds me that growth is possible at every stage of life.
As a Transition Coach and a professional pivoter, I have learned that none of us reaches our destination alone. Every person we encounter contributes something to our journey. My story is really a collection of countless people who helped me navigate one transition after another, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
