We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lauren Harden D.C. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lauren, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Chiropractors are considered primary care doctors in the United States and you do not need a referral to go visit one. You also don’t have to be in pain or injured to reap the benefits of a chiropractic adjustment. Many of those that seek chiropractic care choose to continue to see their providers regularly to offset a lot of the wear and tear that they put on their bodies (living their daily lives) every day. You should really think of the care as preventive but as human we tend to be more reactive when it comes to health-care. Chiropractic manipulation is unique in a sense that it works directly on the nervous system and can therefore be an aid to solving a lot of unlikely health problems.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My name is Dr. Lauren Harden D.C. and I own Body Mechanics Health and Wellness, LLC, a mobile chiropractic business located in Indianapolis, IN. At Body Mechanics we take our services to our patients and our most successful/requested service is our 20 minute multi-physiotherapy session that includes a diversified, activator tool or drop table method of spinal and extremity manipulation. Indiana doesn’t have a strong chiropractic culture and so we stand out as a women owned black business even more because of the service that we offer. Accepting the responsibility of this role, in this place I pride myself on practicing healthcare in innovative ways. Inspired by my post-grad social/educational experiences I have created Therapy After Hours, a relaxing after work party where we highlight alternative wellness, minority business, and black healthcare. Currently I use this event as a marketing engine for the first product line created under my brand. Therapy Tricks card decks are alternative wellness tools that promote self-care, preventive and long term health maintenance. The cards include workouts, recipes for meals, baths and evidence based non-prescription wellness practices that affect the body at a cellular level. The overall goal is to inspire individuals to play an active role in their health care system by making well informed decisions and creating health habits that positively contribute to their specific needs. I pride myself on being an accessible health resource and this product, these parties are an extension of my creative mind and my passion for therapy. I challenge myself daily building my brand and it can be very hard at times but staying consistent and on plan, being adjustable and encouraging myself helps tremendously as I continue to make waves in my field.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Indianapolis is an up and coming city. I have lived here and in California and there’s obviously more to do in Cali but Indy has some GEMS. For one, WE GOT THE BEST DJs. And I say that to say, week day events can go from dinner to a club concert at the drop of the beat depending on who’s spinning. Deejays Duck, DayDay, SpaceBunz, Littletown or Grapevine are good people to follow for week-day options. When in Indy you MUST shop with Antonio Maxey at Nap or Nothing and AO & CP at Cargo Streetwear Boutique. Eating in Indy can be extensive. Chef Oya’s The Trap Seafood, Chef Tia’s Chicken Scratch, Yaso Jamaican Grill, Kings Ribs BBQ, Hanks BBQ, R&R Extreme Wings, Pizza Pizza (on Kessler). Bando Korean BBQ, I could go on. You can follow people like @wheres Mike G to get the latest and greatest on the food scene. Newer food halls like the AMP and The Garage host a variety of great restaurants. After hours I like to hang at Burn by Rocky Patel on South Meridian. A lot of social drinking, partying and entertainment can be found on Mass Ave, in Fountain Square or in Broad Ripple. There are truly tons of options, I could talk forever about my city. You should visit Indianapolis and always check Airbnb Experiences and Eventbrite for local things to do!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to the American Black Chiropractic Association and the 2.3% of black chiropractors practicing in the United States. We are truly unicorns in this world and I want to encourage all my colleagues to keep being innovative and different in our efforts to hold place in the health care system. Continue to be essential and important because you are.
