We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kojo Sarfo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kojo, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I have two main goals. One is my main goal and the other is my selfish ambition. I’m living out my main goal as I have the privilege of serving individuals with mental health conditions everyday. My selfish goal that I would like to attain professionally is to become the first African-American owner of a professional American football team.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work as a forensic mental health nurse practitioner — which is a very unique (and little-known) career. I reached this level professionally by obtaining my doctorate in nursing practice from Augusta University with a mental health/psychiatry focus. The road to get here was not easy and I overcame financial, emotional, and mental barriers in order to succeed. I overcame by having a good support system and by not judging myself for any failures along the way. I’ve learned that everything takes time and that by being kind and patient to yourself, you can achieve anything.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love many things about the Atlanta Area. For me, a week in Atlanta would consist of visiting Lenox Mall and Cumberland Mall – which are two of my favorites. The Georgia Aquarium is a must-visit for those who are new to the city, as I have many great memories there. Additionally, you have to check out the sports teams – Braves, Falcons, ATL United, etc. SunTrust Park is currently my favorite MLB stadium, and I have visited a few of them already. For those who like a more laidback vibe, Stone Mountain Park is always a favorite of mine. In terms of food, I’m a simple guy and I usually prefer Chick Fil-A and Waffle House.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my parents for always supporting and believing in me when others didn’t. Similarly, I want to highlight Mental Health America – which is the nation’s largest nonprofit promoting mental wellness – for supporting me and my mental health advocacy on a national level.
