We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Hugh Flax and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Hugh, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I don’t think people know about all of the technological advances in dentistry. To lessen fear and increase comfort, I utilize digital anesthesia that provides local anesthesia with a computer-assisted system that controls the flow rate and pressure for virtually pain-free injections. I also incorporate lasers to, oftentimes, do treatments with minimal to no anesthesia, and to promote faster healing.

I also utilize AI technology to detect and diagnose oral disease and predict better outcomes. With 3-D scanning, I’m able too visually communicate with patients, showing overtime the improvements or decay of their teeth and gums.

We can look for markers in your mouth that are predictive of how long your teeth will stay in place so you can smile, chew, and enjoy life to the fullest.

The future of dentistry is here, and with digital dentistry and AI, we have more tools and new recipes to help our patients succeed. A healthy mouth does promote a healthy body, and we take pride in partnering with our patients’ to contribute to their overall health and quality of life.”

What should our readers know about your business?
I decided as a kid to become a dentist after experiencing my mother’s dental pain and suffering over the years. The real problem was that she didn’t know how to take care of her teeth and she paid a huge price for it. I made a vow to her that I would be the best dentist I could be and would be an advocate for my patients.

The link between oral health and overall health, as I witnessed my mother’s health declined due to poor dental care, is why I am practicing “proactive dentistry.” Proactive dentistry is the practice of helping patients increase longevity and quality of life utilizing predictive markers in dentistry. Through digital dentistry – – employing 3D scanners, computer-assisted anesthesia, lasers, and artificial intelligence – – I can give my patients the tools to better understand how current conditions have future implications.

The passion I’ve had I want to share with others in my practice and anywhere else so people can live longer and better. Well known teachers like Dr. John Kois have taught us that a lifestyle that minimizes risks is well-known to help us live longer and better. We look for markers in dentistry, as they are predictive of how long your teeth will stay in place so you can smile, chew, and enjoy life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live and work in Sandy Springs and it has so much to offer, I rarely leave. I play in a few bands, and love live music and City Springs has several concerts with City Green Live. I’d either grab dinner at Nam Kitchen before the concert or pick up a box dinner from CityBar. Or grab a warm Cuban sandwich from CubanosATL. The best!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Dr. Ronnie Goldstein gave me the vision that to truly care for your patients, you nourish their souls. Dr. Goldstein is a wonderful, kind person who gave me the perspective to understand patients and what they’ve gone through.
