We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. D’Andrea Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. D’Andrea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew that I wanted to work for myself as a little girl and ended up in education as a teacher and later an administrator. Being a business owner never left my spirit and my time in education gave me the chance to study the school system to determine the need my business would address. Ultimately my goal was to create a business would have a positive impact on Black students’ learning experiences and outcomes. After reading Monique Morris’ book, Pushout, I knew that my business was going to focus on supporting Black girls’ academic experience.

Starting and growing this business has been a labor love. I believe in life long learning and so I’ve continually put myself in opportunities to learn business acumen along with building my own network of resources. I’m not fully where I want to be yet, and I’m so much further from where I started. Business ownership is challenging and my biggest lesson has been accepting the discomfort of being out of my comfort zone to learn and receive help from trusted mentors in the business.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Education Chronicles LLC is an education consulting business that aims to create liberatory learning spaces and implement practices that improve academic outcomes for Black students and students of color. We offer a range of services like online courses, workshops, webinars, and our research-based flagship program called Queens Gettin’ Lit! that empowers Black girls by nurturing their self-esteem, cultural heritage identity, and agency. What sets us apart from established brands is our focus on literacy-based academic intervention support with strategies backed by research and professional educational experience that are specifically tailored for Black girls. We are most proud of and excited about our latest partnership with a California Bay Area school district which has expanded our reach to more elementary school scholars.

Our story is rooted in the lack of diversity representation, engagement, and recognition for Black scholars in education resulting in Black girls facing challenges related to self-esteem and limited career growth opportunities in their academic journey. Our brand is Black excellence in scholarship as we thrive to be a beacon of positive change, creating a brighter future within the educational system for Black scholars and their communities. Queens Gettin’ Lit! fosters connection to Black culture and we are dedicated to revolutionizing the educational landscape for Black scholars and families.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my folks are coming to Atlanta for a weekend, my first recommendation is for them to visit the Apex Museum to learn about Sweet Auburn Street (aka Atlanta’s very own Black Wall Street)! Next catch a game at the State Farm Arena if the Hawks are in town. Hit up BQE for their bomb shrimp and grits or a red velvet waffle while enjoying a live performance in the evening or brunch in the daytime. I also love Midtown Atlanta for all of the art culture and places to see.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My entire village deserves a shout out starting with my mother, Minyon Robinson, who holds me down through all the seasons of life. She’s an unwavering anchor of support along with my younger sister, Valerie Allen, who mirrors our mother’s supportive energy and has always recognized my business as a reality. My co-founders and sisters, Kiana Butler and Alicia Stevenson (Spelmanite c/o 2013), who divinely joined my life’s journey to execute the vision and mission of our business. While there are a host of other sisters in my circle who all deserve recognition, I must recognize my dad, Alfred Robinson Jr., who’s words inspired me as a little girl and became the catalyst for my business and the work I love doing today.
