We had the good fortune of connecting with Douglas Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Douglas, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When it comes to my production, the most important factor has not only been the quality of the music I release but also consistency. There’s always room to improve and grow but, I can hear the difference between the early years of my music production to now. Also, being consistent not only with good music but constantly being in people’s faces. And I don’t mean physically, I mean being visible in the digital stores. Being in the charts at the top is visibility and that’s how I get more work, including remixes and even demos for my record label. In this business, VISIBILITY is KEY.

As far as my record label, by me being visible in the charts and releasing bangers, I get a lot more demos from producers wanting to be down. It helps me to release quality music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am first a DJ for more than 30 yrs. Unfortunately, I started late in the production game but that has not stopped me from being recognized as a top producer in my genre. I set out goals in my first year producing in the AfroHouse genre and I reached each one, from starting my own record label to being named top ten afro house artist in the first year.

Since that first year, I’ve been named #1 AfroHouse Artist of the year 2x by the highly coveted online record shop traxsource.com. It wasn’t easy, It takes a lot of commitment, grinding, and releasing lots of music. And they must hit top ten chart. As I mentioned before, visibility is everything.

Actually, this is my second record label. I started a record label 10 yrs ago but, I quickly learned that not only do I have to up my production game, but why would anyone pay attention to new record label and producer? I needed to make noise first as a producer then everything else can follow. That was a hard learning experience but I quickly realized it and knew what had to be done.

I want the world to know that my record label and my production, represent the roots of my culture and my upbringing. From a Latin kid, growing up in NYC having lived through the Disco, House, Salsa, and hip hop of the 80’s and 90s to the Colombian, indigenous roots of my ancestors.

It’s all about Latin, afro soul music baby.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I live in Costa Rica now, I stopped with the hustle and bustle of New York City and opted for the jungle beach life. Unfortunately, If it’s a fellow music/DJ enthusiast visiting New York City, there isn’t much left in regards to club culture. The record shops that the city was once famed for are no more, they’ve been replaced by the digital world.

However, there are lots of parties that pop off around the city. Some include Club Shelter, the 718 sessions with Danny Krivit, and lots of parties in Brooklyn. Places to eat? PIZZA, what else!?

But if they want to visit me in Costa Rica, it’s all jungle, beaches, and wildlife!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely need to give a shout to my wife, behind every King there’s a strong(er) Queen. She’s had my back from day 1.

I’d like to say that most of my success has been in due part to my grinding and hustling. Being in the business for almost 30 yrs, I’ve learned everything hands-on. Of course, I’ve learned from others along the way from production to learning how to run a record label. But, I’ve carved my own lane.

Too many people to shout out though, but mainly everyone who has supported me, from buying my music to playing it.
