We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorie Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My initial thought for starting my own business was to be my own boss, and to be doing something that I enjoyed and that I knew a decent amount about. I didn’t know right away what that was until I was sick at home in bed and looking at my stand with all my crystals on it, that’s when I was like that’s it! There are no other crystal stores in this town, I love collecting them and what they can do for you and I know a good amount about them.

We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others.
Personally I feel my prices set me apart from others, I price for the area I live in while still making a profit. I ask myself would I pay that for this? If the answer is no I don’t get it for the store but if the answer is yes then I will get it. There have been a few hiccups and moments of doubt
We had a house fire where I lost some items and had to build back up, I had to stop the sales on Facebook and the website for a couple months and was worried when I started again it wouldn’t do as good but it did better.
I also started out in a small room of my house with very little items which at first was fine but as it grew and I had acquired more inventory and added more that small room got very crowed and I got very flustered trying to make the small room work.
Even when I first opened the store front there had been struggles, I had days where I had no customers the whole day, it got discouraging at times but it was about trying to get the word out and let people know there was a store in the area with crystals/ metaphysical items.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them shopping at the mainstreet merchantile, they have so many really awesome vendors and antiques in there. I would show them the state park, as it has so many beautiful sceneries.
As far as eating the Bradford brew station has amazing food. Highly suggest the chicken quesadilla.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband was a full supporter of this, he knows nothing about crystals but when I brought the idea to him he was like go for it. He has been 100% supportive and if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t have gotten this far. I also have to give credit to the customers the ones who have bought from me since the beginning and continue to buy and tell all their friends about my store.
My family mom, aunts, grandma, who have all been so supportive.
The mainstreet merchantile a nice little antique vendor store in my home town, because if it weren’t for them allowing me to rent a space to put some of my stuff and supporting me, I wouldn’t have opened my own storefront.
