Meet Dominique Xu | Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Xu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from my imagination of real life and ancient legends. I am obsessed with paranormal events and legends from various countries. Including the legendary monsters and ghosts. I often combine real life scenes with these legends in my works. I think this kind of work will bring people the feeling of real but not as boring as reality.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been exploring various areas. I have studied oil painting, comics, animation and illustration. In fact, I explored all of this without a purpose, just out of love and curiosity. My desire is to enter an industry and devote myself to it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Travel is going from where you are tired of playing to where others are tired of playing. I have a lot of friends who are Chinese. In China, firearms are banned, so many people have never touched a gun. I would take my friends to the shooting range. For dinner I recommend Steamhouse, which has a great decor and a variety of wines and oysters. The lobster bisque is very famous in Atlanta.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to all the people in this world who love art. This love is not just for people who like to collect famous paintings and enjoy visiting art galleries. You may not even notice it yourselves, but when you buy something you unconsciously choose the more Beautiful one. You may not necessarily buy phone cases to protect your phones. You buy clothes not necessarily to keep warm. Your haircut is not necessarily for convenience. In fact, some of your unconscious actions can show that you love art. As long as there are people who appreciate art in this world, there will be artists. In other words, people who love art nurture artists.
