We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominick Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We are a husband and wife team from Lakeland, FL. We were looking for a way to go out and give back to the community in a way that would be engaging and inspiring. We didn’t want to just write a donation check, but we actually wanted to be a part of the cause and feel a connection with the community. We believe that giving back should be an experience, not a transaction, a time to interact, engage and be a part of the cause. Simply put, we wanted a fun product people could enjoy, that brings people together and does some good. With this in mind, we founded Domi Italian Ice. We are a mobile italian ice company centered around community engagement and organizational fundraising. A percent of each sale is donated to a charity that focuses on one of our five community causes; health, education, everyday heroes, animal welfare and children and families.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We’re a husband and wife team who have volunteered at and supported local organizations for over 25 years. Although we realize there are large problems in this world, we have seen that small wins add up to make a big difference. We recognize that positive change starts with the people in your very own community. This premise is the foundation for our company; its all about our community.
We took our experience as an ER doctor and athlete of over 25 years to lead a strong local team effort. That’s exactly what Domi Italian Ice is and why we are successful; its a team effort. The donations we give to local organizations represent the support we receive from our community, as a percent of each sale actually forms this donation. We really enjoy the opportunity to get others to work together for a cause.
Why Italian Ice?
It’s a delicious treat we love making and everyone loves eating. We are young, creative innovators who wanted to change how people experience it. We were always in the kitchen looking for new ways to take our ice to the next level. We would try “this” and “that,” things that worked and didn’t work – all to perfect our flavors and enhance them with things like our signature drizzles and flavorful and fresh, locally grown fruit, like featured in our Famous “Red Bottom Special”. The “Red Bottom Special” features fresh Strawberries layered with hand crafted Strawberry and Mango Italian Ice topped with our Strawberry drizzle and garnished with a decadent Strawberry.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to see and do in Atlanta. We’d certainly tell them that we are definitely eating 3 meals per day, as Atlanta has some of the most amazing food! We would provide a variety of eateries to cover all types of tastebuds, like: The Flying Biscuit, Atlanta Breakfast Club, Slutty Vegan ATL, & Cheese, Poor Calvin’s, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, Gun Show, Krab Queenz, Iberian Pig, just to name a few 😉 We’d have them rent a bike or a scooter in front of Piedmont Park and take a self guided tour, taking in all of the sights and activity of the park. We would have her check out a mall or 2, like Lenox, Cumberland or Ponce City Market for some shopping.
There’s always something happening in the city, so we’d encourage them to check out the State Farm Arena or Fox Theater for a great performance.
A stroll though centennial park, an uber ride down peach tree st. and then a day trip to Chateau Elan for wine tasting and a day trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains for some horseback riding.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sylvia Blackmon-Roberts of Blackmon Roberts Group Inc. was a big influence for us. She is a longtime family friend from our hometown who attended our same church. She is a very active community member and has a heart to serve. She helped us merge business and passion in a way that intersects successfully.
