We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Nehpets and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dj, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ownership. I wanted to be my “own boss” and get out here and get something started with my own brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As far as art, producing music is fun and making music that connects to people is sooo dope! I started producing by mistake lol!! Dj Jana Rush left her Casio R-Z1 at my house and I got to experimenting and sampling stuff can came up with my first record ever SEGA. From there, I produced more and created some Dance Mania Classics such as LAY IT DOWN and Mario with other big joints on various labels around the city and world. One of my biggest songs I produced was Pop Drop with Lil Wish on it. We did it at a time where the Dance/HipHop stuff wasn’t as popular as it is now. With doing all of that, I parlayed it to being a radio personality where doing Afternoon Drive in the 3rd largest market in the US.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You have to eat at Harold’s Chicken first LOL!! Also you have to eat at Lem’s Bar-b-que. Tuesday, you gotta come to the Taco Tuesday on 116th and Western at Pepe’s. Wednesday, you have to hit Bar 10 for some comedy, Thursday you have to get with me up north at “Never Have I Ever” 2247 N. Lincoln Ave for “Friday Jr”, then Fridays at a spot in the south burbs called Amchee 18405 S. Halsted for Risque Fridays.
Tourist stuff, of course the entire downtown with all the majestic buildings and Food will always be an attraction.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to James Kelly! He’s my mentor in the radio business. Taught me how to be responsible and efficient with radio and spinning records.
