We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Monie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Monie, how do you think about risk?
I have “risked it all” several times on my entrepreneurship journey, and I must say, it was all worth it and I’d do it again! I’ve always kept in the back of my mind, “if you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same results”. Sometimes the best things in life happen outside of your comfort zone. I am greatly motivated by monetizing the passions in my life, so I wake up excited every day and I love what I do!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a body-positive, open format DJ, from the South, but based in Las Vegas. I think what sets me apart is the fact that I created an alter ego brand. The client has the ability to choose their experience. They can book me as “DJ Monie” for Corporate events, TV, Film and Weddings or book me as “The Risqué DJ” for more intimate events, from Birthday parties to Bachelor/Bachelorette parties, and everything in between!
I am a self-taught, pandemic era DJ – and NO, it absolutely was NOT easy! Teaching yourself how to DJ when the world is shut down, probably wasn’t the smartest idea because I couldn’t get help and any help that I did receive, was all done online. However, it gave me a chance to polish up my skills before ever taking them outside. When I did finally land my first gig, I not only had to learn a new genre, I was in an entirely new city, and I knew absolutely nobody. But, I rocked it and just kept going!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love the classic Pappadeaux!! One of my favorite little lounge spots is be Whiskey Mistress, and I love taking friends to the Aquarium when I’m in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shoutout to my supportive manager and husband LaMarr “Lamb” Lewis.
In deciding to become a DJ, I never considered the multitude of ways that my career change was going to affect my husband. I never thought about the fact that he was going to now have to wake up to “good morning beautiful” texts, carry equipment, negotiate contracts, diffuse situations – or even accompany me to every gig. I just want to say “thank you” and I want him to know that none of it goes without notice or appreciation. I wouldn’t be here without you. I love you!
