We had the good fortune of connecting with Dip Patel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dip, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
The language of art is absurd. that’s what made me fall in love with the craft, Acting has the potential to touch all corners of the world. the most fascinating thing I found in myself is I always like to learn new things every day if that is not happening on any of the days in my life that’s the most boring day I have spent on the planet.
There is no syllabus, acting has helped me touch all the corners of the fields that I have never imagined. I couldn’t have done it by doing some other things. I have been studying psychology from scratch for past years and now I feel I am at the intermediate level where I can understand the characters more than ever, I found myself so indulged in bringing the psychology of the character to the screen, one of the most interesting things. I come from a very social culture, India. I spent most of my childhood days in India surrounded by people and relatives mostly knowing them and exploring their side of the brain and thinking and moves behind it, acting interests me the most, so I note they have different body shapes and gestures and ways of eating, sleeping, talking, the way they get anger, the way they have different dynamics with the different people around them.
And there’s me who knows all the hacks of the emotions and all the whys of people. It keeps me a student of life. Another thing about acting that inspires me the most is I have to be at the edge all the time I can’t lose myself even for a moment because it requires a lot it never was and never will be the 9:00 to 5:00 job. I have been doing this for my life and am excited about it. I felt fascinated by all the art on the planet which could never be the case if I was doing some other things on the planet.
In the scene from The Lunch Box Film where Irfan Khan is opening his lunch tiffin in the office, the way he makes that lunch box open, every box is a surprise, where he already as a person knew what’s in each box but then that’s the phenomenal acting that pulls me into the world of acting. when The Wolf Of The Wall Street movie has this scene between Leonardo and Matthew talking about the Wall Street business and doing nothing extra, the scene is more than a jewel that inspires me to jump in this whether I have parachute safety or not.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Artistic life is a way of living, I have felt strongly keen towards the arts and the price of it in today’s world most people don’t know how important it is to be connected to the arts. Acting gave me a strong voice to say out loud a lot of things whether it’s in the writer’s words or I directing my film. I have Lakhs of big and tiny stories to tell the world which they have never heard. I have worked on 8 of the films and a couple more will be done as they are in the production phase. I like people to see what I see and buy from the world. people have their vision of watching the world from their perspectives and interpretations and I have my unique way that’s what I want them to see whether it is comedy, drama, family, romantic or mafia genre. I want them to give it a try making them understand and feel all that I feel from the lenses of the camera. At some point, it feels like I cannot answer these questions because it is all the feelings that I feel to be on this path but all I can do is try. Art attracts me to spend one more day on the planet otherwise I would have been bored as hell on the surface.
To express myself, I learned that “risks are named just risks”, it was a breaking point in my life after I believed that, I never tried to play it safe, not taking risks is boring and in the rare case if I fail I learn a lot from it. As I studied for my bachelor’s in business administration in accounts and marketing I started to blend risk with strategy I tried to calculate all the worst scenarios and the costs, most of the time it’s just fear that holds you back which makes no sense of holding if you look to the scenario after few years or months.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would make them visit one of my favourite spots out of the city in silence surrounded by the mountains called Lake Vista Drive. In between the mountains, nice Malibu Creek and Malibu Lake, you can find all of them there with greenery all around that’s one of my favourite spots. I would like to stay there for a night spend a day reading and sipping coffee and sometimes I do write. I love the town, it’s like a town from one of my dreams. which is around 30 miles drive from the city.
Another spot where I would like to ship the coffee would be Verve Coffee Roaster and Peet’s Coffee.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank Dharmesh Metha, the director of my first film and all the casting and film directors who have helped to achieve all the success I have till now, it’s impossible to have what has got to share. I would like to thank Raghav Aggarwal sir for exposing me to the world of cinema and for my knowledge of acting, I would also like to thank the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and all the teachers who have helped me a lot more than ever.
