We had the good fortune of connecting with Dionne Roland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dionne, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I believe work life balance is key to running a successful, fulfilling business. My work life balance has altered tremendously. Since Covid, I’ve had a daughter so prioritizing my time management has become key. I work Monday- Friday 9-4 , and even after hours or off days to accommodate my clients, pour in to my brand, and stay up on my hustle. I also make sure I prioritize self care, finding time to actually rest, being a hands on mother, and making mine and my daughter’s health a main focus! Certainly it gets overwhelming at times managing it all, but having a steady and peaceful balance with my work and personal life is a top priority.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
About your craft, what you’re most excited about, how you got to where you are, what you want the world to know. I would say as an artist I express myself through the craft of hair hair cutting.
What sets me apart from other barbers is my work ethic, my integrity, and definitely my aura and personality! I’m known first and foremost as THE GIRL WITH THE GREEN HAIR, and that alone makes me stand out in the crowd so to speak, and I’ve branded myself on that! I am also extremely creative and willing to try new things!
I feel like I am also a very authentic and joyful person and people can feel that!
My story started in 2016 when I got my bachelors degree and I came to the realization that I no longer wanted to pressure the career I had just gotten my degree in, which was culinary. I decide the kitchen was just not where my heart was, and that truly, I wanted to our sure a career in the barbering and beauty industry. I made a promise to myself to follow my heart, so I buckled down, enrolled in barbering school, and that’s where it all took off! Going to barber college was one of the best decisions I made in my life! I had the time of my life while I was there, I made life long friends and brothers from the classmates I had. I give thanks to all of my teachers and I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything in the world. I do also want to acknowledge those classmates who aren’t here with us any longer and the ones who didn’t go on to be barbers, the road wasn’t always easy, but I am glad I stayed true to my goals and kept my promise to myself.
I believe that everyone goes through challenges, but in my opinion, what makes a business strong is going through challenges. If you’re able to face your challenges and get yourself out of your comfort zone to grow, then your business will be successful! I feel like you need challenges in order to grow! Not just as a business person, but on a personal level as well! I feel the industry even needs to challenges in order to continue to grow and expand. Challenges are necessary.
One thing I’d want anyone in the industry to know is it doesn’t matter what stage you’re in in your life, what your age is, what your circumstances are, go after what makes you happy! If there’s anything at all that you’ve ever wanted to do, do it. If you’ve always wanted to own a horse, own a horse, if you’ve ever wanted to write a book, write that book. You only have one life and you should do the things that make you happy, even if it’s only for yourself!
I’d want everyone to know about my business that although the barbering industry has gotten a bad rep throughout the years, I’m able to set myself apart by how I conduct myself, customer service wise, with my integrity and my work ethic. I also love pouring back in to my community. I love partnering with the community to give back to the youth, give free hair cuts, I’ve done Career Day at the local school in my community, and collaborating with other beauty professionals.
My motto is “I can change someone’s life with a touch of a clipper”. Whether it’s helping someone less by giving them a free hair cut to score that new job, our simply lifting up a Kid’s confidence with a fresh cut. I can change someone’s life with a touch of a clipper, and I’m great full for my talent and my craft.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I’m not really a going out person but I do have my spots I like to indulge in. I like a good walk around botanical garden. I love to eat at Flower child restaurant. When we wanna get lit we can go to
Edgewood because it’s always going to be popping. Atlanta over all is a city with endless places to have fun . It’s truly no one place could be your favorite hell even 4 places.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starting off, I would love to first acknowledge my mentor, Angel Robinson. She is someone I greatly aspire to be like. She is profoundly talented, knowledgeable, and is a BOSS in the hair industry. Next I would love to acknowledge the brand No Grease. Id love to give a shout out to all the owners of No Grease, Dan , Charlie and Jermaine. They are the first black owned franchises barber shop, they have multiple locations throughout the country, they’re constantly expanding, and I am proud of my association with the company as a whole. I’d also like to make a shoutout to all the self help books I’ve been able to indulge in that have helped me expand my ways of thinking and grow as a person.
Lastly I’d just like to pay homepage to the barbering and hair industry as a whole and all of the barbers and stylists that have influenced me in a positive way along the years. I can reference so many people but to keep it short I can say I am immensely grateful to all the knowledge that has been poured in to me and the gifts of wisdom given.
