We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Ampomah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diana, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea of creating WOW! Afro Community came from a new year resolution to make an impact in my community. I thought of hosting events that foster Black unity and support businesses in the community to promote social and economic development.

I envisioned the idea of creating unity in the Black community by bridging the gap between Africans in the diaspora and our African American Brothers and Sisters by way of celebrating each other’s culture and experiences through Music, Arts, Dancing & Drumming,Food and fashion. Hence, the birth of WOW! Afro Community in 2019.

I firmly believe a united community is a catalyst for social and economic development. Therefore one key objective of the WOW! Afro Community is to leverage the events we organize to provide an opportunity for businesses created in the community to be supported. Therefore, most of our events have a vendor market.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets WOW! Afro events apart is the fusion of African and African American culture where we always ensure something unique is learned about each other in every event. We are very intentional about the planning and organizing of our events to help promote understanding and appreciation of our diverse backgrounds. One important lesson I have learned so far during the journey is the importance of open-mindedness. I have seen people from diverse backgrounds come to our events and fall absolutely in love with a music, dance or fashion that they have never experienced before. This builds unity, love, respect and tolerance for each other.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Trying different African dishes would definitely be something I would do with my best friend. There are quite a number of places here in Atlanta where we can go to have such dishes but the place that stands out for me is Ike’s Cafe in Norcross. Their African food menu is just awesome and they play some really good Afrobeats tunes too!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my mum. She has been an inspiration to me and growing up, she tried to instill in me the essence of unity being strength. She quoted this Ghanaian proverb a lot of times -“Broomstick, when you remove one it breaks; when put together they do not break”
