We had the good fortune of connecting with Dezy Jackson-Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dezy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I approach risk with faith! Risk can be tricky but I’ve learned over the years that we take risk daily! For me I took a huge risk, my family and I moved all the way from Oakland ca to Atlanta just for me to follow my dreams. I look at it more as having Big Faith but it’ was still a risk. I stopped working a full time 9-5 job to fully focus on being a makeup artist and doing it more than just on the weekends. It has been one of the best Faith move/Risk taking decisions I’ve ever made!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This road has not been easy but it’s definitely been an insightful journey and I wouldn’t have changed it. I’ve learned the do’s and dont’s in this industry and honestly I’m still learning! There has been days where I questioned if being a makeup artist and choosing this career was worth it and it’s my faith and prayer that has kept me rooted and grounded to stay focus. I love being versitile in doing makeup being able to do glam for my everyday clients and also do makeup for production sets such as tv/films, photoshoots ect is always fun but can be challenging. But I love a good challenge it allows me to find knee strengths and perfect my weaknesses. I pride myself in helping ppl who have never worn makeup or had negative perceptions towards it find the beauty in makeup and also find the beauty in themselves. I’m a very confident person with or without makeup on! I try to let people know I’m not making you beautiful I’m enhancing the beauty you already have! I want everyone I come in contact with know that they are someone special! That their beauty is one of a kind! To know that beauty starts with self confidence, self love, and knowing it’s ok to look different than someone else! You’re still beautiful! I want the world to know that Classy Face By Dezy strongly believes that beauty starts before the brush strokes! Whether I’m on set doing makeup or doing makeup for a bride I want them to know and feel that they are beautiful before makeup ever touches their face. People have alway told me they admire my confidence and how I carry myself but I had to learn who I was, I had to heal from childhood trauma and I pray I’m able to help and continue to encourage others who need it through my passion and love for makeup
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly I’ve only been to a few places since moving here in February. But definitely would go to the linnethia lounge, 5 Church,& the aquarium because believe it or not going to see animals is relaxing and therapeutic to me lol
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God first and far most! Without him i promise you nothing would be possible! I credit him for everything! My husband also! There were days that he believed in my dream more than me and pushed me to keep going on those hard days or wanting give up days! He’s definitely that guy! My 3 daughters who literally look at me as a celebrity and when I tell them I’m not they tell me you will be! My mother who passed away in 2017. She is the reason why I love everything beauty! She was my inspiration and the reason behind my business name! My grandfather who passed in 2020 he pushed me to be the best version of and keep God first, and my praying grandmother and aunt! They are my cheerleaders! I call them on every big or little job I do and they are always so excited and proud of me with so many encouraging words to follow
