We had the good fortune of connecting with Deysia Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deysia, how do you think about risk?
Being an entrepreneur, your whole journey is about taking RISK! No risk no reward still very much exists. I moved to Atlanta without even visiting before I came. I heard it was the “New Hollywood” and I’m a professional dancer…. it only makes sense to come here. I didnt have a long term place of living, I didnt have a job, nothing…. just $1,000 in savings and a car stuffed with things from my house in New York. I used $150 of that $1000 to enroll in a membership for a dance studio in Atlanta and within a month of being in Atlanta I was shared on Beyonce’s page, had 3 paid gigs and was working part time to support the dream I was chasing. I dont know how I made it to where I am now I just know I never stopped grinding for what I wanted. I work as a professional dancer full time. My brand, Why Be Average, will always follow me because thats what I constantly tell myself daily as a reminder that I want to be better.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
How I got to where I am today was by never giving up. Sometimes I had to take a step back, or change directions and create a new plan but I NEVER GAVE UP. When you find what you love you keep striving for it everyday, even if its small steps. If youre never challenged or second guessing then youre not growing. Those are the growing pains of evolving. I had to accept constructive criticism which was something that was always hard for me because I had a lot of pride at one point. I mean damn this is what I do every day, nobody wants to be told theyre not doing their best, but I eventually learned how to apply new changes that were necessary and ignore advice that wasn’t beneficial to me or my brand. If theres one thing I want people to take from me and my brand its…. WHY BE AVERAGE?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places in Atlanta is definitely Little Five Points. Its has restaurants, shops, and art all around the area. Its definitely a fun time if youre looking for that kind of vibe. I also like to go to Havana Cigar Lounge in Sandy Springs because they have live dancers (I was one of the performers at one point!). I also went to a bamboo forest on a hiking trail by Chastain Park and I loved it! I would recommend anyone that likes outdoors to go there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone I need to give recognition to in my story is Jessy aka Krayne Ru. We moved to Atlanta together. We were following our dreams together. He played a major part in supporting my dreams as well as pushing me out my comfort zone when I was hesitant to take another leap of faith.
