We had the good fortune of connecting with Dexter Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dexter, what role has risk played in your life or career?

When I think of risk, I think of myself immersed into an uncertain thing with the hope of a positive outcome.

The risk to put myself out there as a professional singer/songwriter has brought me great success in the music industry.  Most importantly, I get to bless people with my gift of music from God. It continues to be my driving force to make music and pursue a dream.

I am the first professional artist in my family. My deep roots in music start with my mother and father. My father currently serves as a minister of music in Atlanta, Georgia, and my mother would sing in the choir.

During my career, I have met greats like Ari Lennox, Yebba, and Samoht. Each artist has supported my artistry and music. I have performed in large cities such as New York, Atlanta, and L.A. on the strength of my music. I have also, opened for artists such as Anthony Hamilton, and Kevin Ross.

Risk taking can be scary.  However, there is beauty in the outcome, regardless if it is good or bad. You grow and become a better person.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I have been singing since the age of 5 and started singing professionally at the age of 20. My voice is very jazzy, but I like to sing over hip-hop music, and of course R&B. My musical influences are from Jeff Buckley, John Legend, Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, and Erykah Badu. I would also listen to the Clark Sisters growing up as a child. It was one of my Mother’s favorite vocal groups.

I can truly say that it has not been easy getting to where I am today. At 28, I have suffered a lot of loss. My mother passed from breast cancer when I was only 22 years old. I lost a dear friend in the process of making my album “Blue” to mental illness in 2017. In 2019, I lost another dear friend to diabetes after releasing my album. He was only 25. These three individuals supported my music career wholeheartedly. Now, they are my angels. I will never forget their impact on my life, and it is the reason why I still create music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite areas in the city of Charlotte would be: Uptown, NODA, and Central. Uptown Charlotte would be for more classy events to dine and enjoy a date. You could also enjoy a basketball game, or a football game uptown. NODA is my kind of speed! This area is very creative, and the artistic side of Charlotte in my opinion. My friends hang out here all the time. I would say the same for Central. I love to watch shows at Snug Harbor and finish off my night with eating a pizza slice or wings at Fuel Pizza.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I would love to shoutout Jason Jet, my producer and friend for many years. I created my debut album “Blue” with him in 2019. I would like to shoutout John Blount for producing my top hit “Hello, New Me.” This song has changed my career greatly in music! Last but not least, My family, friends, and the Charlotte Music scene. The community in Charlotte, NC has shaped me into the artist that I am today.
