We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desiree, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to be obsessed with my craft – literally staying up watching YouTube videos until 4 or 5am in the morning. I couldn’t stop talking about lash extensions and all the different styles I had in mind. At one point in my career, I was lashing until 2 or 3 am in the morning. I just loved it so much, that I neglected myself.

Over time, I realized that if I wanted to continue doing what I loved, I had to love myself just as much. Especially if I wanted to be here to do it for a long time. Boundaries became a big thing for me. I was so thankful that iPhone added the Do Not Disturb feature because it is definitely my best friend. I decided that I wanted to balance life and work however, it turned into me truly wanting harmony instead of balance. I believe that harmony is effortless and balance requires a lot of work. I decided to be more intentional with my schedule and now I can harmonize with my business schedule!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my brand in the living room my of 1 bedroom apartment. I used my husband computer gaming chair and a clip on light to my dining room table to install lash extensions. I used my last $150 to purchase a lash kit and lashed anyone who’d let me. I did so many FREE sets people would’ve thought I was crazy doing all that work for free. It was not easy but I saw something that many don’t when going through a career change — the light at the end of the tunnel. I saw myself being my own boss, opening a spa, having employees and expressing my creativity with no limits. I am proud that I stayed the course through all the no’s, long days and long nights.

One lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to never make decisions based on how you feel in the NOW. It’s okay to take your time and make a decision because that one decision can change the entire trajectory of your life. I want people to know that it is OKAY to move slow, the only person that is rushing you, is you!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love love love Virgil’s Gullah – they have the best soul food eggs rolls I have ever tasted. The vibe was super laid back but sexy and glam all at the same time. This next one might sound basic but I absolutely love going to the Georgia Aquarium – it’s always a good time and is a little touristy but it’s relaxing to me to visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my Shoutout to my amazing husband. He is and has always been the peace in my storms – especially in business.
