We had the good fortune of connecting with DeShaun Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeShaun, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always had love for creating things from my imagination and being able to see the things I would think of be brought to life. It feels as though it is my purpose to create art, there is nothing that I feel more passionate about. I could not see myself doing anything other than creating things in an artistic atmosphere, I really feel like this is just something I am destined to do with my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Everything for me started when I was around the age of four, my mama would draw with me and show me how to draw people and faces. From there I would draw every chance I got after she taught me, I would draw cartoon and video game characters that I thought looked cool. Eventually, I started to become a bit burnt out from drawing once I got into high school and that was when I discovered other mediums to work with from taking my high school art classes with my teacher Ms. Griffith in the 12th grade. I started to learn about different art techniques, artists, and art periods, for me everything was new and a different side to art other than just drawing which is what I was used to. Around this time I also realized that I wanted to go to school to follow my passion so I enrolled in SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). Starting college I tried to find my artistic voice, I didn’t like to draw as much anymore and I learned digital art but it still didn’t satisfy my craving for expression. When it came to selecting my major I chose painting because I never really tried it but I would come to understand it was the best decision I made. Through painting, I found my artistic voice, it’s really something that almost feels like a spiritual process for me. Everything that has influenced me I see in my work and when I paint it feels like I put a piece of myself into the canvas to give life to it. Whatever I felt or thought is on display through my artwork as though they are frozen in time full of feeling and emotion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots to hang out is the High Museum, I like going to art galleries around the area. I also like the atmosphere of Little Five Points, everything feels like a hub for self-expression.
