We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick “King June” Ballard Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick “King June”, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to tell stories of the forgotten and shed light on those who haven’t received their “flowers”. I’m an artist that loves express myself in many ways. Directing movies gives me more freedom to “paint pictures” I see in my head.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a film director. I shoot stories that relates to the ups/downs of the black community. I always provide an underline message; to “take accountability and knowing the consequences of one’s actions”. Throughout my journey, I’ve went through a lot of high and low moments. Many situations discouraged me to continue this path, but I worked through it all. I’ve learned to believe in myself and to follow my heart. My brand represents my love for us and it absorbs the integrity I possess. My mission is to remain connected to black culture and to be the model example of “black excellence”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to the skating rink I attend every Sunday (Sparkles in Smyrna, GA). Monday: Magic City, Tuesday: KOD, Wednesday: Cascade Skating Rink, Thursday: Blue Flame, Friday: The Parlor & Sunday: Sparkles Skating Rink.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to everyone that’s going after their divine purpose. My testimony will inspire the world to never give up and to believe in self.
