We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Humphrey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process around that time was that I had already proven myself amongst other professionals at different levels. I worked with the President of an organization, various managers, managed and executed projects, etc. I figured if I was able to do all of this at an adequate level for a salary, I could probably do this by myself and make double to triple the income. I also felt that I was no longer learning very much and that I had hit an intellectual and experience ceiling. In order to learn, earn and gain more, I would have to move into other positions. When I would assess the salaries of those positions and compare them to the work, it just didn’t make a lot of sense. I would add a Sr. next to my title, add an incredible amount of extra work and accountability, and maybe make $500-1000 extra a month to my salary. In my eyes, this didn’t really move the needle and this further let me know that being an employee would never get me rich and fulfill me the way I wanted.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I currently own three companies. I am the owner and COO of Lion and Panda Inc. a digital marketing agency that specializes in lead generation and data analytics. I am the owner and President of Wolf Line Logistics, a transportation company specializing in hot shot hauling and furniture delivery.

What distinguishes our marketing agency is our expertise in extracting the most relevant data segments, utilizing them to precisely target and effectively generate leads for our clients.

What sets us apart in the logistics industry is our agility in swiftly adapting to route demands, coupled with our commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.

To keep it simple, a little luck and me never giving up. Business is extremely hard. It’s very volatile, mistakes can cost money, it’s time consuming, mentally taxing, the list can go on lol. Consistency, Discipline, Preparation and Time-Management are essential.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way are endless. One that stands out is slow growth is better than no growth.

What I want the world to know is I’m a true entrepreneur. I have ideas and I can execute on those ideas. The brands I’ve help build are solid brands that conduct good business, bringing value.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depending on what they look, I would take them to a couple of different spots. If they’re into Jamaican food, I would take them to this spot called Taste of Jamaica for the Jamaican vibes. I’m also into Thai food. Spot called Singha Thai or Thai 9. Fire spots. There are lots of others, but these stand out to me right now. For night life, I’m not really out too crazy. I got a hole in the wall joint I’ll hit up called Parnters. I’ll hit downtown every now and again and do a more upbeat scene. Couple night clubs down there. There’s a cool music scene here so I’ll go and catch some independent acts from time to time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
