We had the good fortune of connecting with Denzel Redd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denzel, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Being an artist is one of the illest skills someone can have. Whether it’s songwriting, acting or painting, we all desire to translate a message that was gifted to us by God. To be able to articulate what we feel into words, or bring our vision to life on a canvas requires an amount of stillness that I don’t think a lot of people have in our fast pace society. It takes not only a high level of awareness to distinguish the physical from the spiritual world, but a high level of sensitivity to notice when your antennas are going off.
I believe that music is a bridge to get to a world that’s not seen, but felt. I personally call that world The Hidden Valley.. and every time I’m in it, I notice 4 emotions that evoke out of me.. Stillness, Freedom, Awareness and Courage. I experience stillness when I’m listening to the guitar solo on John Mayer’s Gravity, Freedom when I’m singing You Don’t know My Name by Alicia Keys.. I unlock a new perspective when I hear Change by J. Cole, and gain so much courage when I’m playing ZTFO by Big Sean. Music has given me the push that I need to evolve, and the vulnerability I need to let go.. With my brand The Hidden Valley, I desire to translate the perspective of God through my music at the highest level, by creating a world that emotionally connects individuals.. evoking stillness, freedom, awareness & courage, with intentions to inspire people to their own desires. If I’m able to translate a perspective that is easily digestible for the listener to hear and have them experience an emotion through it, I would say I have done my job as an artist.. helping the world one song at a time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey started back in 2020 when I was a freshman in college.. my roommate James properly introduced me to the world of hip-hop. I was familiar with popular songs, but I never dove into an artist’s discography and listened to full albums. I remember he played Damn by Kendrick Lamar.. when Fear came on, that was the moment a seed was planted. From then we started having album listening parties and my love for albums continued to grow. I would say my favorite listening party was when we heard Big Sean’s Detroit 2, and Full Circle came on.. we both went CRAZY.
I started falling in love with the stories of albums, and soon enough I was in a rabbit hole. During Christmas break I went thru the discography of J Cole, Big Sean, Drake and Kendrick. I fell in love with lyricism so much that I started writing essays about songs, annotating lyrics. I would show James and he would find them really interesting, until one day he said “why don’t you write music?”
At first I laughed at him, but the more I thought about it.. the more I was intrigued in that world. I decided to give it a shot. Now 4 years later, I’m now in Atlanta catapulting my career as an hip-hop artist.
Hip-hop has completely changed who I am. As someone with no family for guidance, I’ve learned so much about the world & life through the lenses of others through hip-hop. Artist like J.Cole have given me a perspective that I wasn’t fortunate to get with from parents. I’ve learned the importance of balance listening to Russ’ project Santiago. The dedication I must have to reach my goals by listening to Victory Lap by Nippsy Hussle. What real love looks like through the eyes of Mac Miller’s The Divine Feminine. Everyone has a different perspective, and that’s the beauty of art.
I still have so much to learn as an hip-hop artist, the art of delivery being a primary one. Although the journey has been amazing, it hasn’t been easy. It’s been a road of trail and error, fear & lots of self doubt.. however, I’m starting to see little views.. Hip-hop has taught me so much about myself, and my intention is to do the same for people by creating albums that represent life through my lens.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still new in the area so I’m trying to figure that out myself lol.. However, I do work at Wicked Wolf in Midtown and they have everything.. Great food, drinks, sports and a night life on the weekend. That would be my recommendation.. Go to Wicked Wolf, and Piedmont Park
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without God I wouldn’t have any material to write.. I’m grateful for him giving me his perspective to translate to the physical world, and for him introducing me to my actor roommates at Oakville to continue this journey, as well as the person who introduced me into the world of Hip-Hop.. Javi Sarache Jr, Jake Summers, Philip Smith, & James Bruce
