We had the good fortune of connecting with Demetrius “Meech” Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetrius “Meech”, what role has risk played in your life or career?
when it came to starting my clothing brand it was a big risk. I knew it would go against the normal way of doing things in my family which might cause some family members to question my decision. However, I knew that I had to make a change in my life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my business is called Bee Nubian Clothing it was established in the spring of 2021. I started this business to express my creative side and to provide more afrocentric imagery to fashion. As I am continuing to learn the in’s and outs of the business and can be challenging but I love a good challenge when it comes to creating. The Bee Nubian brand goal is to inspire and uplift all Nubian people across the world and let them know that we are great people that can whatever we set our minds to.

What was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Many of us work dead end jobs that leave us feeling unfulfilled. Whether it’s due to being compensated unfairly, overworked, or just due to boredom. I’ve been in all of those positions, and I realized that I would never be fulfilled working jobs that don’t speak to my soul or cultivate it. Starting my own business I felt I would find more inner peace by doing something that expresses more of my personality.

Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?

Anytime you step out of your comfort zone it’s a gamble and risks are involved. Some people fear taking a risk in their own lives because they plague their mind with thoughts of failing if they do. However I’ve learned to embrace taking risks … calculated and well thought out risks of course. If i never took a risk to start my business I would probably still be in a work environment that didn’t challenge my mind or showcase my talents/gifts. If anyone reading this is scared to take a risk remember these two quotes

“The biggest risk a person can take is to do nothing” -Robert Kyosaki
“ With great risk comes great reward”- Thomas Jefferson

What’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?

Designing clothes isn’t as easy as some people may think, at least not if you’re looking to create apparel that is not only fashionable but artistically expressive as well. During my journey into the fashion world I’ve realized that not every idea or design will translate well onto garment. But I’ve learned by paying attention to detail, and making the right adjustments you can produce a product people will love. In addition to that I’ve learned that even though some designs may not work, I can always start over and try again. That lesson is one I apply in my daily life. (never give up)

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Observing the fashion industry I noticed that there weren’t too many brands out there that represented “black” culture and or the voice of black people. I wanted to fill that void giving us more cultural power within those fields. My nubian brothers and sisters often look down on black designers, clothing lines etc but give praise to Italian, greek, and european designers. I think it would be beneficial for our people to embrace clothing lines and designers that reflect our struggles and our victories.

Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

As I’ve mentioned earlier I love to create whether it’s music/writing, drawing/designing or even building something. As an introverted person I felt I needed an outlet to voice my thoughts and ideas. I chose a clothing brand because outside of music it is one of the best ways I could express myself and show the different sides of my personality. When I create and share it with the world I have hopes that people will get more of an understanding of the mind behind the work. I also hope it motivates others to express themselves as well. We all have something to say or want to be heard and we all should have a chance to be heard.

What are you inspired by?

I’m naturally a loving and compassionate person …or maybe that’s just how I was nurtured, either way seeing the good in people inspires me. I love to see people helping others, motivating others, assisting others etc. I’m also inspired by my ancestors, those that fought for justice and righteousness, those that paved the way for us. If it wasn’t for those that fought for us where would we be?

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in Atlanta are the vegan restaurants lol I love them all! If your into clean eating that will give you a burst of energy and leave you wanting more, I recommend “Life Bistro ATL”, “Slutty Vegan”, and “Bakari’s Pizza & Lounge” just to name a few. Outside of these restaurants Atlanta has so much to offer theres way too much culture here for me to recommend just one place you have to come here to experience yourself so book that room, buy that ticket and get here!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this article to my mother Kimberly Johnson and my brother Wasteen Walls who are the most influential and supportive people in my life. My mother has always been a motivating force throughout my life I’ve learned a lot from her teachings and by observing her character. Her natural trait for helping, uplifting and inspiring others has always been something I admired about her. In addition to that she was my first supporter and investor in starting my business. I hold the same esteem for my brother who’s guidance has helped me navigate through life with more purpose and understanding. His dedication to upholding family and his contributions to the community has influenced my drive towards accomplishing my goals as well.
