We had the good fortune of connecting with Demarco Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demarco, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was talking to a friend over the phone and we shared coded dialect that we had never discussed before but we understood each other. When hanging up I thought it was unique that we could understand an unspoken language of slang that has bridged many generations of black people dating back to slavery, slaves talking in codes as a means of survival. I wanted to shine a light on the uniqueness of our culture being able adapt to a coded language comprised from our experiences of being black. I wanted to give slang language and accented expressions of words a platform and thats how I formed the idea of creating my gaming company Trap Spelling Bee.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self taught professional graphic designer and as I evolved my ability to create graphic designs it sparked creativity in me to take on the challenge of becoming a game creator. Building a design is like peicing a puzzle together and the same concept is what I apply to creating card games from scratch put one piece together at a time until you have a complete project.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Trap Museum, it’s the best representation of our culture in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my tribe. My family and closest friends. Those who supported me through hard times, not so good decisions, and trials & tribulations. Those people all know who they are and without them and their support I would have not had the capacity to pursue my dreams. So everyone who played a part big or small in my journey I would like to shout out and thank.
