We had the good fortune of connecting with Deja Tyla Tomlinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deja Tyla, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own resume writing business was a natural progression from something I had been doing informally for years. I’d started informally by helping friends, family, and colleagues craft impactful resumes. It began as a hobby, something I genuinely enjoyed, which was taking someone’s story and helping them present it in a way that opened doors. Over time, I started realizing just how many people were struggling to effectively market themselves on paper, and how valuable my support was in helping them land interviews and new opportunities.

That’s when it clicked for me: this wasn’t just a side business. In fact, I had a skill set people truly needed. I saw an opportunity not just to monetize something I enjoyed, but to expand my reach and help more people position themselves for success in a competitive job market. What started as one-on-one help turned into a broader vision of providing professional branding support, resume coaching, and job search strategy to a wider audience.

To me, launching the business wasn’t just about earning income but also about making a bigger impact. I wanted to turn my passion into a platform that could empower others to pursue the roles and careers they deserve.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started writing resumes as a hobby, helping friends and family who needed support in their job search. Over time, I realized how much I loved it and how many people truly struggled to market themselves. That’s when I knew I wanted to turn this into something bigger, a brand built on purpose, authenticity, and empowerment.

It hasn’t been easy, and it’s definitely been a journey, especially with children and a busy home. I had to learn how to run a business while still delivering high-quality, personalized service and working full-time. But every challenge has continued to teach me how much this work matters. I’m most proud of the impact I’ve had, which has consisted of watching my clients gain confidence, land new roles, and realize their value.

My goal is to build a brand that stands for more than just resumes and coaching. I want to create a space where people feel seen, supported, and equipped to reach their potential.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t get out much these days, but when I do, I love places that are beautiful or rich with history. If my best friend came to visit, we’d take scenic drives, explore historic landmarks, and visit quiet spots with stories behind them.

I’d skip the overcrowded tourist traps unless we were going on a slower day of the week and focus on meaningful experiences, including my favorite chains, local restaurants with charm, local malls, peaceful nature gardens or wineries, and places where you can feel the past come to life. It’d be a week of simple, purposeful moments and great conversation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my two beautiful children —
You both are my reason, my strength, and my constant reminder of what truly matters.
Through every challenge life has presented me with, your laughter, love, and light give me purpose.

To my husband —
Thank you for always being our constant—our support, our strength, and our safe place.
Your unwavering love and dedication to the children and me mean more than words can express.
