We had the good fortune of connecting with Debra Mazer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I spent my early 20’s living in intentional communities and ecovillages. There, we could create our own culture and life the way we chose. Work made sense: cooking, cleaning, building, growing vegetables in the garden, communication, meetings, parties, wellness. I learned from an early age to think outside the box. With a Sociology and Women’s Studies degree, I learned to think outside the system. So, that was always a goal of mine: to follow my dreams, to stay true to myself, to live out the creative visions given to me. I learned when I am “obedient” to the Universe, is when life flows. And I feel aligned and good.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am a book author. So far, I’ve written and self-published 7 books, including e-books, and ones that are out of print. Two of my books have appeared on: Today.com, Huffington Post, The Shift Network, VegNews. I am proud to say, Bernie Sanders, Marianne Williamson, and the late Wayne Dyer all have or had copies of my books. I’m proud to say, I’ve always put myself out there to meet my mentors. I’ve even fed Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae my Hot Love Chocolate Truffles, just as a gift. I say, go after your dreams. Write them down. I use an amazing yearly goal workbook by Leonie Dawson. I take into account the cycles of the moon. I always listen to my body, and intuition. I teach what I learn. I receive support.

I’m proud to say I’m working on my next two (dream!) books. One is a raw food recipe book, the other is my personal story. I’ve studied and invested in working with my mentors. Book authors like SARK and Sabrina Ward Harrison. I recently started writing raps and poetry under the guidance of my friend and mentor J Brave. I’ve started to perform open mics.

I am a student of The Artist’s Way. I do Morning Pages daily. I channel from Spirit daily. These practices help me stay aligned and draw down creativity and guidance. Being an artist is a way of life. It infuses itself into everything I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ahhh… I would take them to Jeju, the Food Truck Park, Tassili’s, Healthful Essence, Slutty Vegan, Lov’n It Live (I have a thing for Black-owned vegan businesses and have worked in several of them!) Soul Vegetarian… I feel the Black vegan community is an important part of Atlanta. Definitely go to the Beltline, roller skating at Cascade, to my home for tea, an Amethyst Biomat healing session, and some Hot Love Chocolate Truffles.  When it’s time of year, Sex Down South and Afropunk were truly inspiring experiences.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Lots of people deserve recognition. My Mom and Dad for their support.  It’s important to acknowledge that I received a college degree without student loans and that’s a privilege.  When I was 18, I read SARK, Shakti Gawain, and Tony Robbins. SARK has been an influential mentor. My college professor Maurie Stein, for seeing me and believing in me, and giving me a Teaching Assistant position in Sociology as a sophomore! His classes introduced me to meditation, holistic wellness, natural alternatives to the medical system, and living as if this year were my last. Truly an enlightening experience for an 18 year old. The amount of people who have influenced me, supported me, inspired me, is truly endless. I am constantly being inspired and fed. Support is essential, whether it’s taking a class, reading a book, hiring a coach, having really great friends, a therapist, an energy healer, a resident psychic, getting out into nature, etc.
