We had the good fortune of connecting with Debbie Emery and Mark Emery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debbie Emery and Mark Emery, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My husband, Mark and I used to have a tech company that was based around hiring. We found that the hourly workforce was being ignored by job boards and that a suitable platform for hourly jobs just didn’t exist. So when we sold our first business we knew our next venture had to be aimed at helping this group. We have 4 children. 2 are salaried workers, and 2 are hourly workers. Actually, our household is a pretty fair representation of America’s workforce (53% of Americans work hourly jobs). As parents, we felt 2 of our kids struggle to find jobs that worked for them. The lack of awareness of local opportunities meant they faced an exhausting commute and ended up pouring half their wages into their gas tank. Meanwhile, our salaried kids had recruiters and a bunch of other tools available to them to find work. So for us, this is what solidified the need to flip the narrative from you having to search for a job, to jobs finding you. And that’s exactly what Juvo does!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It’s a big risk to present a completely new way of finding work and the biggest challenge we face is educating employers and seekers on this new way to hire. We always say if you’re an employer stuck on page 42 of a job board, you’re never going to be seen by the job seeker who could live just around the corner! That method just doesn’t make sense to us. Especially for small business owners who prefer to hire from within the community. So when you become a Juvo member, your jobs are actively pushed out to local seekers to create the ultimate awareness of your business. Even if you’re not hiring today, you may be tomorrow. So we keep all your jobs on the app, all the time. For no extra cost. Once you get into the habit of hiring proactively like this, you’ll never look to job boards again. Another key concern we had going into this was to make Juvo accessible for people with learning and developmental disabilities. Our own kids have some learning disabilities and that has been a barrier to them finding work. Resumés and long cover letters can be a real challenge, and we just don’t think a piece of paper can truly show off your personality. So we made the choice for Juvo to host video introductions. These quick videos sit on the seeker’s profile and let you learn about their experience, skills, and what they’re looking for. This makes the job application process much quicker and more accessible for all. It’s something that we will always keep front and center of the app.
Juvo has had a great year, we expanded nationwide and we’ve welcomed new members from all over America and from all different industries. Our current goal is to continue growing our seeker base and adding more employment opportunities to the network to satisfy seeker demand. The reason we came up with the idea for Juvo has always been to increase awareness of job opportunities, support local communities, and cut the time it takes to hire new talent. You just download the app, get your jobs added to the map, and Juvo does the rest.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love Atlanta and especially our Dunwoody Community. Nothing better than a Thursday evening listening to live music at Brook Run Park with dinner from one of many food truck choices. Atlanta has many awesome communities and we love to support local businesses. Downtown Norcross is fun with shops, breweries and The Crossing Steakhouse. Many days you will find us working at Crema, our local coffee shop in Dunwoody. Catch a show at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center and if you have a long weekend, check out Lake Burton in the North Georgia mountains.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Juvo would not be possible without our amazing team of advisors, investors and employees. We are so grateful to have an amazing group of people that work hard everyday to help hourly workers live their best lives. We are thankful for the thousands of employers that have joined the Juvo network and are willing to hire differently. It is fun and exciting to be impacting the lives of thousands of people everyday.
