We had the good fortune of connecting with Deak J. Smalls and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deak J., what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
In all honesty, I really can’t see myself doing anything else that doesn’t pertain to acting or anything surrounding this business. I love art, I love creating it, forcing it, giving and receiving it. I think my life would serve no purpose if I wasn’t in this field. I was a kid with an wild imagination and I want to create and tell stories that gives me a sense of satisfaction that I’m supposed to do this.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor in film and theater and I’m proud of me being able to display my art to the audience by telling a story and me being convincing. A lot of work, studying and self evaluating, self loving, reading, and meeting a lot of people got me more and more closer to where I’m aiming to be. Nothings never easy and the beauty in that is the harder your journey the more harder you push through it to achieve your goal. I’ve learned that you have to work at a steady pace, less thinking and more of flowing with the work. Allowing yourself to make mistakes and learn from them and unlearning. Be prepared to be open and most importantly have fun.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t have any specific places I would recommend. I would recommend to explore all of Atlanta, there are more than one thing to do and learning new things to love. I love hanging around areas that are eccentric and full of life and colorful places.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to give credit to my parents, they knew their son was different than the other kids who were into sports or whatever. I was into movies, cartoons, sorely telling, drawing. My children for instilling bravery in me to continue to push through adversity because I know they’re watching their daddy overcome obstacles so they can do it too. My granny, she along with my parents knew I was special and didn’t try to change me. Rest In Peace Granny. My lovely lady, she would always encourage me to go harder and be better than who I was before. To challenge myself to be phenomenal.
