We had the good fortune of connecting with Daysha Excell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daysha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that calculated risk taking is important. The reason I included the word “calculated” is because I believe things need to align/add up with your over goals and where you want to see the best version of yourself. Risk taking can be similar to “stepping out on faith” depending on how you choose to look at life. When you are aligned with the right things mentally, spiritually and emotionally you see risk taking as an act of faith and opportunity to solely believe in a high power. Risk taking is vital to the process of growing a brand or business and even in the journeys of life. I see risk taking in my life and career as an opportunity to tap into my faith that whether win or lose I know that I am wiser. Risk taking has led my name to enter rooms my body hasn’t. Risk taking landed me a cosmetic line that I only imagined having. Risk taking has made me qualify for things I may have been “under qualified” for to some. If I feel moved to step out on faith fearlessly and believe in my heart that things are aligned with me, I then speak that those things will come to me. I took a risk when I decided to return to modeling ask a “husky” model; 5 years later I’ve published on 10+ websites worldwide, have landed professional model gigs and more. I took a risk with becoming a make up artist 4 years ago; current day my work has been displayed on BET, VH1, ReVolt, I’ve done make up for multiple influencer and artist such as @yesimprettyvee, @diamondxl (seen in August Alsina “Pretty” video) and. I have traveled the states providing my services. I took a risk and moved to Atlanta 2 month after college; now I have 4 streams of income, clients that come from all over and a thriving products base brand.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professional make up artists and beauty expert with a background in Public Relations (PR). Over the years I established a travel make up service called Doll’d by Day, where I satisfy all make up needs. I travel locally and across the states providing my services for weddings, birthday celebrations, graduations, brand and personal photoshoots, special occasions and more. I have also own a cosmetic line called Bella Dond Cosmetics with make up products handpicked and created by me. I’ve gotten to where I am today by taking every opportunity to put myself out there, plug myself in and network. Everyday is an opportunity to meet someone who can potentially be a client, partner, investors or anything. Engaging in casual conversation can lead to your next business venture or good advice. It was not an easy task and takes a lot of vulnerability to put myself out there in a room full of people, but it has made me memorable for always having courage. Sometimes putting yourself out there can lead to a dead end, but that simply means it wasn’t aligned for you! Delayed but not denied! Also, dressing the part is important too. Appearance isn’t everything but it is the first thing people see. It is important that everything is cohesive from the brand the face of it. I’ve met many clients from them noticing me and my make up. Foremost, practice consistency. Consistency is something I find myself and many creatives struggle with. The key to consistency is finding out what your end goal is, then focus on the journey, not the destination! Always remember the destination is final if you stay on path and keep going. Along the way, I’ve learned that you have to be able to be a student to your craft and life in order to advance. There is something you can always learn. Once you have forgotten how to learn you become stagnant. I’ve also learned knowing your “why” is a key point to staying motivated! “Why do you get up?” “Why am I doing this?” It keeps you accountable and aware of the purpose in things. I want the world to know that I am just scratching the surface of what’s to come for the Daysha Excell brand overall and I hope that you all continue to be a part of journey. My brand was created to uplift, empower and acknowledge all forms of beauty conventional and unconventional. The purpose of my brands is to remind everyone that you’re beautifully made in the image of a being so great, that you should always see yourself as such. Let that inner God or Goddess show and may your life leave a God like fragrance on this Earth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in the City is Ponce Street Market for the variety of food and view of the surrounding areas. I enjoy finding museums, art shows, pop up shops and local events for entrepreneurs. I am a big fan of the hidden gems in nature in Georgia, such as the Roswell Mill and Waterfall. I am a foodie, so I enjoy trying new restaurants. Some of my favorites are Copeland’s, Mary Mac Tea Room, and The Juicy Crab. I enjoy lounges with music, hookah and bites. Some of my faves in the city are House of Hookah, Harold’s, and Boogalou. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my Lord and Savior first, because without him I am nothing. I would also like to shout out my parents for there support along with my sister Diamond Excell who keeps me motivated. Big thank you to my solid team that invest in me and vise versa, Tiffani Minter of ToonTYM Visuals (Photographer), Giles Williams of GW Creatives (Photographer), Shaniece Govan of Shaniece Hair (Hairstylist), Troy Gaskins and James Rozier (Stylists). Lastly, thank you to every client, supporter, friends and family that has grasped an idea of my vision and has supported me on this journey.
