We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Kutob and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was that I needed something that made me happy. I wanted to show my kids that being a business owner took dedication and that was something I lacked for a long time.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Fly Body Fitness and I provide athletic wear and assessories for women. I think what sets me apart is that I am a one woman show. I had absolutely no help, no team, no mentor, no money and yet I’m still here trying to overcome the obstacles of being a solo act. Where I am today isn’t where I want to be, but quitting isn’t an option for me. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that no one will look out for me. I have to do that on my own. I have to take control of my business and get it to where I want it to be. I want to know that my brand is about empowering women to feel good and loon good when working out. My story is that of a woman who went from having everything, to having nothing, to finding her way back while dealing with depression and anxiety. I am proud of the woman I am today and look forward to continued growth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love a good brunch spot so we would definitely visit Suite Food Lounge, maybe Blue Martini. Live bands is a must so Whiskey Mistress on a Saturday night is my spot. I absolutely love New Orleans food since I’m from there so we would eat at the poboy shop in Decatur. Food is amazing. Sunday at the Tiki Bar is a good way to end a week long visit with awesome DJs and good carriebean food. During the week, walking the belt line is always fun and even taking a nice hike at one of the many amazing parks here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My children were definitely My inspiration and also my very good friend Kiana Canada who lives in Maryland. She encouraged me in ways she’ll never know. Just uplifting me when I thought I couldn’t do it meant the world to me. There were many days I cried and she told me to push through and never quit.
