We had the good fortune of connecting with Darlynn Marks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darlynn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The though process was all about how do I suffice the need. As a Seamstress, I had to decide which type of client would be best to work for. I chose to cultivate my work within the plus size area. Plus size women don’t always have the best pick of clothes or the seamstress that is willing to work with us. I wanted to cater to that need.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a seamstress and Jewelry designer. 10 years ago, I decided to help supplement income by making jewelry and selling at local flea markets and pop ups. I was working in my living room. It grew into a small business, I have one employee and a workspace. 6 years ago, I decided to follow my dreams into becoming a full time seamstress and textile educator. The hardest challenge was trying to recover lost supplies after the Baton Rouge floods of 2017, I lost everything associated with my business. I worked hard, without loan or outside help, to recover everything I lost so that I could began again with my business. What I am most proud of is that no matter what happens, thing work in my favor to keep my business thriving and successful. I’m thankful for that. The biggest lesson is to have a team around you who sees your vision the way you do. The biggest thing that I want people to know about my brand is that I love what I do and it shows in everything that I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
if my friends were looking for a good time in my city, we would go to the museums down town and then out to Dragos for lunch. Baton Rouge Just got its first arcade with a bar, so we would have to go BRcade. Saturdays are brunch at Bullfish Grill and them Shopping on Perkins Rowe. Sunday is a relax day. There would be breakfast at Louie’s cafe, then a nice walk in the park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to Shoutout my friends and my Mom. Kim, Petrouchka, Kathy, Deleon, and My mom Pashina. They encourage me to take the steps to follow my dreams. Had it not been for them, I don’t know where I’d be. I have a wonderful group of women in my life.
