We had the good fortune of connecting with Darian Reilly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darian, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was opposed to photographing people at first. I was complacent with nature and animals. When a friend of mine asked me for a session, I reconsidered everything. I fell head over heels having people on the other side of my lens, more specifically couples. Turning my hobby into a career felt completely natural. I’ve always pushed myself out of my comfort zone. I love learning new things, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else with my life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography is ten years in the making and every day I still learn a little more about who I am. It hasn’t been easy and in the beginning, I definitely didn’t take it seriously. But through ups and downs, I’ve pieced together what I really want with my photography. I was told at my very first wedding (I was probably 17) that I wasn’t good enough because of my gear. I saved and bought the best gear I could. I learned the tech and figured out what styled I loved most- that led me to film photography. In the more recent years, I’ve learned that while it is great to invest in the latest tech, the number one thing I can invest in is education. Now, I have a grasp on what my goals are, who I want to serve, what my brand identity is, and how I am different from other photographers.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d love to show them the landmarks. I’d take them to the aquarium and The World of Coke. We’d visit Ponce and have Krispy Kreme. The Varsity is a must, at least once. We’d walk around Piedmont Park, Centennial Park, and ride the Ferris Wheel. I’d show them where my uncle lived and take them to a little place called Rueben’s right around the corner for lunch.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I could list every family member’s name that has ever helped me, we’d be here for days! I owe a lot of my success to having such a wonderful, supportive family and husband!
