We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2012 I went through a deep depression. I engaged in therapeutic services, however none of my therapist looked like me. Nor could they relate to my struggles as an African American female. I did not feel seen, heard, acknowledged or understood. Although I received the treatment that I needed, there was still something missing. I continued to struggle with my mental health over the years and engaged in therapy but yet still none of my therapist were relatable. In 2017 after leaving a high stressed, emotionally, mentally and physically draining career in child protection, I started working for a community mental health clinic. It was a great job but I did not feel fulfilled as it was not my passion. I was unable to build my niche and work with the clients I wanted to work with. I realized that now I was the therapist not serving the population that looked like me, talked like me and who I understood.

Inner You Clinical Services LLC was born in August, 2018. My thought process for starting my private practice was to help adults overcome challenges in their lives due to anxiety and depression related to trauma by helping them to develop the necessary tools to manage symptoms in an appropriate and productive manner, where they are heard, seen, acknowledged and validated, so they can take back control of their mind, body and spirit and enjoy the life they deserve.

I wanted to start a business that catered to helping others learn the importance of self-care, healing and transformation. I do this by offering individual therapy services, writing a self-care blog and hosting a mental health podcast. Along my journey into owning a business I also learned that I have talent in helping other mental health professionals by offering clinical writing services including email campaigns, blog content, social media post and workshop presentations so they can have the freedom and flexibility they deserve. I also ensure to give back to my community by participating in community giveback events and by facilitating women empowerment groups in the community.

Transformation and healing is very important to me and my thought process included being able to relate to my clients. This is my superpower. I have had the same struggles and challenges with anxiety and depression, so I can relate and understand. I use purple butterflies in my logo as purple represents royalty and because butterflies represent transformation as they turn into something beautiful through struggle. My thought process and purpose for my business is the sound belief that healing starts from within, the inner you.

What should our readers know about your business?
I provide individual and group therapy to adults age 18 and over who are struggling with their mental health. I am also a clinical content writer, podcast host, blogger, women empowerment speaker and working towards being a future published author.

I am most proud of the work that I do with my clients in helping them to heal from trauma and making changes to have the life they deserve. Working on yourself and being vulnerable enough to do the work to heal is not easy. What sets me apart from other’s is my calm demeanor, straight forwardness, being relatable and my ability to allow my clients to be themselves while doing the hard work. We laugh together, we cry together and we get to know each other in a therapeutic relationship. I am transparent with my clients as we often times enjoy the same activities, restaurants, etc and I let them know that I am human, have problems and have healing that I have done and continue to do.

I am most excited about branching out to do more clinical content writing work for other mental health professionals. I enjoy writing and doing research, so knowing that I am doing something I enjoy while helping my peers makes me excited. I am also excited about my podcast, called The Purple Butterfly Podcast. It is still fairly new, however I have some great ideas on revamping for 2022 and some great guest scheduled for the new year. I also recently created a 2022 self-care calendar that I love because self-care is my thing. My motto for the calendar is “lets make self-care the vibe all of 2022”.

I have gotten to where I am with my business through trial and error. I had no idea how to run a business or start a private practice and had very little help with getting it off the ground. My sister-in-law was instrumental in helping me with the business organization piece. However, for the private practice therapy piece I did my research, watched others and listened. I have made many mistakes, however I take them as a lesson learned, revamp and start over. I have learned along the way in this journey with my business, to be patient with myself, give myself credit for the work I do and have done and be okay with not knowing what I am doing all the time. I have learned that in order to succeed, you have to invest in yourself, invest in your business and ask for help. I call that growth and learning. Now I have others coming to me with questions on billing, for consultation and setting up their practices.

I want the world to know that my passion is helping others who are struggling with their mental health and being someone who they can relate to, be acknowledge by and be understood by. I want the world to know that my brand is about transformation, healing the inner self and self-care.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely go to the Wadsworth Museum in Downtown Hartford, CT as it is one of my favorite places. I would take my friend on a night out at the casino (Mohegan Sun) as they have great restaurants and entertainment. We would also go to the shore to have some seafood as the best seafood restaurants in Connecticut in my opinion are by the water. Sunday unlimited mimosa brunch is a must at either The Russell or Grill Too. A game night at home with friends and family would also be on the list, nothing like a good spades game and playing Cards for Humanity. A chill day of self-care including a massage, facial, nails, pedicure, V-steam and depending on the time of year going to the vineyard for wine and dinner afterwards. A day trip to NYC for sight seeing, a Broadway show and dinner in Harlem would also be on the itinerary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is to my dream team (Shontelle and My’isha), my coach (Tangie) and my number 1 supporters (Alonzo and Quincy), without them pushing me and taking me out of my comfort zone I would not be successful.
