Meet Daniel Friedberg: Cinematographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Friedberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I believe the reason I pursued a creative career is out the need to communicate. The satisfaction of being able to create and express something through a craft, in my case imagery, is infectious and very satisfying. 

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think if you ask a lot of people in film production they will all tell you there is no one way that people navigate the film industry. I initially went to film school and then started working as a camera assistant on bigger productions while always continuing to shoot projects on the side. It was a great education to see how Cinematographers at the top of their craft worked and then try to utilize some of the things I had learned on set and practice them on the smaller jobs that I got to shoot. It was a time where I got to develop my style as a cinematographer, trying things and seeing what I liked visually and more importantly what I didn’t. In time I was shooting more and more projects to the point where I was supporting myself as a working cinematographer. I started shooting short films which lead to commercials which eventually lead to television and features. It was never easy in fact quit the opposite, It took a lot of sacrifices to make the switch to shooting full time. There were many hard times and disappointments along the way and it would have been much easier to quit but I think it was ultimately my determination and love for the craft that has lead me to where I am. I would like to think that I bring these characteristics with me to the projects I work on. No matter how hard the project no matter what we are up against as a production my determination and eye for the craft has helped navigate us to elevated the final product. I take a lot of pride in the fact that the hard ships I have gone through ultimately shaped me into the professional I am today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The aquarium is always a relaxing and fun spot to go and I always recommend majestic diner

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Rebecca Ulmo. She is my inspiration and constant collaborator. I wouldn’t be where I am without her love and support.
