We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Leung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, why did you pursue a creative career?
My mother was an artist. While she wouldn’t call herself one if anyone asked, she was the best illustrator I have ever known. Granted, I’ve only saw what dusty and old sketches she pulled from who-knows-where for a glance, but they always lingered in the back of my head. In my mind, my mother was an artist and so was I.
Coming from a small family who was frankly new to America, it wasn’t ideal for me to go into a creative career. In fact, my mother went to college to pursue art, but had given up her dreams long ago to make a living and raise a family. Despite my family’s hardships, no one shamed me for pursuing art. Of course, they wanted me to make money, but it made me happy when I drew and it makes me happy now when I design. My creative side comes my mother and I want to embrace it as much as I can.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was always inspired by exciting and bold designs in video games and it kind of reflected into my own work. Since playing games is my hobby I always feel inspired to incorporate some type of fun and vibrant visual to my designs! This could be the color palette, artwork, type, etc. When I design, I want people to feel how fun it was me for to create and design the work they are seeing.
My desire to showing this playful aspect reached another level when I started learning about motion graphics. Of course, it was difficult since I had just started learning how to make still designs and suddenly I needed to make something move. However, over time the programs I thought were confusing suddenly became less of a burden to use and the ideas I had in mind finally seemed achievable. It just took a little time, patience, and a couple of all-nighters and lots of coffee.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a little embarrassed to say this, but I am usually not the person who knows the “good spots”. In fact, I’m the person who wants to explore new and exciting places, but doesn’t know where to start. However, if I were to plan an itinerary I would probably take them to spots I am regulars at and then research the best places in Atlanta. To start, I would take to the best shopping areas and cafes in places like Duluth. I would then take them to more of the “hot spots” in Atlanta like the Georgia Aquarium. To end the trip off, it would probably be fun to explore the nature and scenery of a nearby hiking trail or park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout to my older sister Tiffany. She has been with me through everything and despite all the fighting and bickering we’ve gone through, I want her to succeed in what she loves doing which is also…art! Though she prefers the traditional stuff and I mainly do digital, I love watching her paint and I love it even more when she gives me free art. She teaches me about different artistic techniques and I teach her how to use digital programs. Though she can annoying, I wouldn’t have made this far without my sister.
