We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Jackson C.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This is a great question! I really believe at a young age, I noticed I was different. Everyone was stuck in traditional thoughts of college, grad school, Job. I always wondered about how all these companies got started. Who helped these people? Did they go to college? Why does everyone want to work for someone and not themselves? My entire school journey was on my terms as well! Some days I skipped school completely but I maintained a great GPA and never missed practice of course! What can I say, I’m an Aries true to form, I get bored easily! Once I started to figure out that I didn’t need a degree to do some of the highest paid jobs, forever type of jobs, and trades I was totally off degree work and into the field! My doula brand came after my original business which is an event planning company called Events with Flava. I started that business during the shut down of 2020 and it was defiantly a new look on entrepreneurship! Overall , I’m grateful and humbled by the experience it took to set the path to being your own business and defiantly understand why the employee route is the most chosen/ easier option!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business Is The Birth Homie Doula services. I offer Sex( intimacy) , Birth, and postpartum with a special scope focused on plus size! What sets me apart is I’m the Homie! lol Literally, I treat my clients like fam because that’s who we are to each other! I don’t code switch so there is a lot of slang and laid back conversation going on, most of the time lol. But, I create a space for my clients to be themselves free of judgment and pressure to present themselves another way. I’m most proud of doing just that! I love the flow I have with my “Homies”. Business wise today, I got here by networking. Social media is an incredible tool! especially for people like me who just moved to the area and didn’t know a soul! It defiantly was NOT easy lol Trying to rebrand work a 9-5 and parent All in a new space, in a new city and state and all the help and people you know are now 13 hours away! I’m still learning and don’t believe it’ll ever stop, but its defiantly worth it all. I want the world to know about the Birth homie that, you don’t have to be in a certain class to get a birth on your terms! You don’t have to pretend to be “proper” to be treated with respect. Be yourself and God will bless you with what’s for you!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, Honey how much time we got? Lol So, First I would suggest the Battery its so much to do there plus one of my favorite bars is there. Then to maybe a spoken word, live music show or something of that sort. Bonfire on Sunday night! First Fridays at underground for some art and music! Its just so much to do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of Course! First and Foremost, I want to thank God for EVERYTHING (Psalms 138) , I want to thank my Dad for spoiling me but always teaching me the importance of boundaries and meaning what you say! My stepmom Vee for really putting the vision of entrepreneurship in front of me and showing me no matter where you are you can always start “plan your work and work your plan”! My Grandma Mary for passing down her heart of Gold to me. My grandma Deb for reminding me I can do anything! My Mother for always showing me what true sacrifice looks like. My Extended mom Denise and Fam for ALWAYS having my back and carrying me and My daughter through whatever journey we take. My friends who constantly encourage and support me! My Divine Doula tribe! Jenisis, Lovely, Lesley, all three reminded me why God choose me to be this person and helped me in one way or another regain my self and push me to keep going! Last but not least ME! I work my ass off to do anything I want! I’m so damn proud of myself for always listening to my heart even when I’m afraid!
