We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Torain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up I always knew I wanted to own and operate my own clothing business. It wasn’t until I struggled with infertility and successfully conceived my son before I realized what type of clothing business I wanted to have. Anyone that has or is currently experiencing infertility knows that often times you feel very isolated. You constantly feel like you’re on a roller coaster of emotions from one moth to another wondering if this will be the month you will finally get that positive test result you’ve always dreamt of. After so long, you can’t help but begin asking yourself “why me” and questioning whether you will ever get the chance to become a mother. Although I knew there were other women experiencing what my husband and I were going through, in that moment it seemed like we were alone. We felt like there was no one to turn to and express our feelings and thoughts to, so we held onto each other and helped each other the best we could. I knew then, that I wanted to create something for all women to be able to relate to, share their experiences with, and learn from. I wanted TDM to be more than just a clothing brand, and I wanted everyone that TDM came in contact with to feel a sense of love, support, inspiration, and encouragement.
The Destined Mom was formed as a way for me to build a community of women and mothers from all over to share in their journey of motherhood, regardless of how it may look for them and regardless of how they got there. Each individuals journey is different and unique in its own way, but together we believe in the unity and sisterhood of motherhood and celebrate the highs, lows, chaos, and love all surrounding motherhood and life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Courtney Torain is a wife, mother, and registered labor and delivery nurse, who has always had dreams of owning her own clothing brand. After battling infertility struggles and conceiving her son, she knew she wanted to create a brand that was family centered that also brought a sense of community for all women, regardless of the journey they were on when it came to motherhood. The Destined Mom, LLC aims to bring women of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds together to share in the sisterhood of motherhood, to create a loving and judge-free atmosphere for women and mothers to share in the highs, lows, chaos, and loving moments we all face while navigating our motherhood journey, and to simply remind others that we are only as strong as the mama standing next to us.
I think many, if not everyone, would agree that the entrepreneurial journey is one of many twists and turns. You’re constantly learning as you go. Just when you think you have something figured out, theres something else to learn and figure out. Thats one thing I like about it though, theres always room for growth and learning. TDM recently just turned 2 years old, and I look back at where it all started to now and I’m just blown away at the growth and beyond excited for the future of TDM. Every day I wake up grateful for the support we receive from others, and feel honored that families all over trust TDM and allow TDM to play such a small part in their family memories for many years to come. I don’t think it gets much better than that!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of my biggest supporters, my husband, has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders. Anytime I catch myself doubting my vision or second guessing he’s always there to remind me that the Lord has given me the vision because he trusted me to execute it. He’s always encouraging me and motivating me and just pushing me to keep going no matter what. He’s also the muscle behind TDM – making and building things needed for the business, lifting all the heavy stuff, and helping wherever he can.
My son is the motivation behind TDM and my “why”. On the hard days, all it takes is one look at him to remind myself why I started this brand, why I must keep pushing forward, and why I hold it to such high standards. He’s old enough now to “help” so we both enjoy dropping off packages at our local postal store together. He loves handing each package to the postal worker and looks forward to the “surprise” they give him afterwards for a “job well done”! 🙂
My dad plays a huge part in helping me understand different business principles, taking risks, making business decisions, and learning how to scale. As a very successful businessman himself who owns several different businesses, I’ve always looked to him for business advice and have really valued all the things he has taught me thus far. It’s nice to have someone close to talk business with while also learning and growing. To say he plays all the roles, would be an understatement. He’s my dad, business mentor, business coach, supporter, an encourager all in one!
My grandmother, thats my girl! We’ve always been close. From being a registered nurse to owning my own business, she’s always the one rooting for me, no matter what, in everything I do.
My mom is the one that constantly throws new ideas my way. I know whenever I am struggling with design ideas, I can count on her to help me come up with some creative ideas. She’s also the one that pushes me out of my comfort zone with trying new things.
There are so many others that I would love to shoutout for being such HUGE supporters of TDM, one of them being all of those a part of the TDM community!! Through TDM I have been able to meet some wonderful women and mothers both online and in person! TDM wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for all of them, and for that I am forever grateful and sending them the biggest of hugs!
