We had the good fortune of connecting with Cortavious Finnie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cortavious, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking a risk is like dodging a bullet you didn’t even know was coming right?
For me, the big gamble was packing up and heading to Atlanta as a hairstylist. Scary? But you know what? It ended up being my proudest move. Being away from home opened my eyes to things I never thought were possible. I never imagined myself as an entrepreneur, making those crucial connections, thriving, and soaking up all that learning. It just sort of happened, you know?
Taking that risk didn’t just change my path, it completely transformed my perspective on what’s achievable and how resilient I can be.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You know, what really sets me apart creatively is my love for documenting my work. I mean, doing hair isn’t just a job for me–it’s pure art. There’s nothing that makes me happier than creating a killer hairstyle and capturing every moment of it on camera. And you know what’s cool? Someday, when I have kids, they’ll get to see just how talented their old man was, and still is.
But let me tell you, getting to where I am today wasn’t just about luck. It was about being consistent and staying true to myself. I’ve always believed that what you put out into the universe comes back to you, tenfold.
Now, when it comes to my brand, it’s all about celebrating the beauty of women- inside and out. I want every person who walks through my door to feel like they’re not just getting a service; they’re getting a full-on luxury experience. It’s like therapy for the soul, but with fabulous hair to match!
And hey, speaking of expanding horizons, we’ve recently jumped into the e-commerce game. We’re rolling out products that take hair installs to a whole new level. Take our latest gem, the Lace Glue-it’s like magic in a bottle. This stuff melts right into the lace, giving you that extra security and peace of mind. Because hey, looking and feeling fabulous should always be effortless, right?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My friends kn0w I’m going to make sure we have fun when they visit Atlanta. First, we’re going to eat. I love trying new spots, and honestly, we all do. All my friends love to eat, so I can never go wrong taking them to get something to eat. Next, we’re going to a water park, preferably in GA to ensure everybody is tired lol. I love the water park. We will end the week at Cascade Skating Rink. I love skating; it’s so therapeutic and it just brings all of us together
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for my mom. She instilled entrepreneurship in me at a young age. Right after I graduated high school I immediately informed her of my dreams as being a hairstylist. She began quickly persuading me to get my own salon because she didn’t want me working for anyone esle. She knew how much talent and ambition I had and she didn’t want that to be taken advantage of mentally and financially. At the time I was so excited to get in a shop because I was the only boy around my age at the time doing hair in my city. I’m a gay black man so unless you were doing something to stand out, naturally you were overlooked because of society. It was rare to see a young black boy getting booked back to back. I ended up hitting one off my biggest peaks in life. I honestly feel like me having my own salon contributed a big role in the peak. I provided a luxury experience for my ladies from lashes, hair, food and hookah. I couldn’t have soar and gave my clients a luxurious experience without my moms ideas. Whether it was promoting by word of mouth or coming back to me consistently, My shop make us all feel at home, my mom is the mastermind to a lot of my achievements. I love you forever.
