We had the good fortune of connecting with Comfort Akuamoah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Comfort, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The first time , I gained interest in the makeup industry , it was because I had accidentally shaved off my eyebrows the summer of my junior year in high school back in 2015. We all know that 2016 saw the rise of on- fleek eyebrows and I was one of the eager teenagers to join the movement but as time went on , it become more then a movement , it became a passion. That passion led me all the way into the art of makeup.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Pro Makeup Artist who specializes in soft glam makeup , bridal makeup and editorial makeup. I am known for bringing vision board ideas to life and I love working with other creatives and brides to bring forth stories that we want to tell. Starting in the makeup industry was rough because I lacked resources and confidence. I was scared , I was insecure but most importantly , I wasn’t ready. Business will force growth on you because it takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions and test. My journey has redefined who I am a woman , an artist , a friend , a partner and a business woman. I had to learn to accept no’s and failures . I had to learn to cope with disappointments and betrayals but most importantly I had to learn to embrace each season and its lessons. I met helpers along the way who helped to cultivate and build my brand to what it is now. I chose the name Kaloné Artistry because “kalon’ in greek means beauty is more than skin deep. With my brand I want people to know beauty is deeper than just skin ; it is a gift that is brought to the surface with the pureness of the heart. So while others reach for the stars , I’ll be reaching to touch hearts with every stroke of my brushes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, we would start our day off with a trip to the Georgia Aquarium , then the Illuminarium , and then lunch at Roc South and for cultural foodies like me , you have to visit Le Nouvea Maquis for authentic African cuisine and Fireside ATL for authentic Jamaican cuisine. Then I’d show them around Ponce City Market to enjoy some fresh air. For a night out with the girls , take a trip to Cirque Daiquiri Bar & Grill for drinks and fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I had to shout out anyone or anything first , it would be God. He has been my confidant , biggest supporter, and friend throughout this entrepreneurship journey and I am grateful for his love and favor. I definitely want to also shout out my siblings. They have been my driving force in everything I do because if I make it , then we’ve all made it , so see you at the top Crystal , Emmanuel & Rhoda. I would like to take this time to shout out my parents for instilling in me the values that make me the woman I am today. In accordance , I would also like to shout out Tiffany , Vida , Frityana , Dr. Hesse , Dr. Kyeremaa , Summer , Cyndi , Nadia , Cassandra , Mona , and all the women in my life who have given their time , energy , support and most importantly, love to my craft and helped build it to the stature where it stands now. To my partner , Bernard , if I don’t say it enough ; thank you from the bottom of my heart because you’ve been steering this boat with me from day one , and even in uncertain waters , you never let me sink. Shout out my big brothers , Ernest , Amos , Isaac , Derrick , Kevin and all the others who are so greatly appreciated as well. Last but not least , I want to shout out my mentors in the industry and in business. Thank you Terri , Valarie , Regina ,Pauline, Dr.Holyfield , Habi , and countless others for your words of encouragement , lessons , advice and brutal truths. Without you my team , I wouldn’t be able to play on the fields I play today.
