We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Waymon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m born and raise in College Park, Ga. Atlanta has impacted the music industry for over 20 years. I went to Tri-Cities High School where I truly developed a love for music. I was the drum major and I played 4 different instruments. While in high school I created a group with my childhood friends where I was able to get us a record deal with Outkast and Stankonia Records. Also a lot of people in the industry I grew up with before they made it in the music industry so I was able to move with and connect with a lot of people in the music industry. So when I started my business I wanted to incorporate my two loves music and Atlanta. So I created Gate City Management, Gate City was the nickname for Atlanta back in the 1800s. My friends in the music industry help me understand how and what it takes to be a successful artist through artist development and marketing.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What separates me from other businesses is that I think out the box and pay attention to detail. Currently I’m excited about the new film and Tv production I’m currently working on. I have 2 feature films that I’m producing, a comedy show that has been approved for Netflix, and I partnering with a fashion designer to launch a luxury mens business casual clothing line. I feel like my ability to network and build connections in the entertainment industry is how I’m able to grow and build a successful business. It took me years to build a network, and by far it wasn’t a easy task. You met a lot of people where some of them were blowing smoke, liars, or scammers. For every 10 people I meet there were at least one person that was truly genuine. This made me develop a tough skin for people and not to trust what people say. More of “don’t talk about it, be about it” Also a weakness for helping people. I used to do business of my feelings and people took advantage of it. It took me years to learn my lesson. I remember clients use to say “I can’t afford to hire you” so would lower my prices to help them but later I found that they paid other people 3x times the amount of what I was asking for. Even though my services was better they didn’t want to pay me because I want on a reality Tv show or didn’t thousands of social media followers they didn’t want to hire. And the other person they paid more for there services ended up scamming them and taking their money. I want people to know and feel that I will always be someone in their corner that’s knowledgeable and have their best interest at heart.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly don’t have a favorite spot or certain place I like to visit. When your with good friends and family you can enjoy yourself weather your standing in the parking lot, at home, or going to a lounge we tend to enjoy ourselves no matter where we are.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people that truly help me to get where I’m today. My wife and three kids deserve credit for being my side and supportive throughout this journey. Tawanda Jones gave me taste of the film industry by hiring me to do and the soundtrack and a film producer. Yusfa Muhammad gave me first opportunity from the Sweet Auburn Music Festival as a production manager of live events. Indrea Gordon help impact my career in the fashion industry.
