We had the good fortune of connecting with Cherylynn Spence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherylynn, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I noticed the lack of diversity in the yoga spaces online and in many of our local yoga communities as well as the amount of bias received due to the shape, size or difference in black practitioners and teachers alike.
I knew I wanted to create a community that would offer education, peace of mind and true connection.
FreeBodyYoga is a wellness brand dedicated to creating a shared space amongst yogis of color.
A easygoing space to practice yoga with confidence while networking with other like minded individuals. Our passion is to help build more health awareness + wealth opportunities.
What should our readers know about your business?
FreeBodyYoga is here to empower myself and others alike; to fully embrace all of our natural features, from size, form, to scars; stretchmarks… one thing; we all experienced; having insecurities.
I first explored Yoga when I was pregnant with my first son. At the time I was a fitness head enjoying much running and intense workouts. But, with my body changing and my movement somewhat restricted; I did not have same confidence in my body and knew something had to adjust.
My first practice was with a lady on YouTube name EstarYoga and her slow movements, strength and sense of peace; I was drawn in and enjoyed seeing my body in a whole in light. Shortly, I was introduced to breathing exercises as I begin to noticed my breath .This was the start of a more personal journey within.
One of my favorite quotes that I don’t remember were I seen it, but it said ” Yoga opens doors within” I felt this in my entirety. This was 12 years ago and with diligent practice, joining many online yoga challenges, and my passion for growth. I wanted to share all that I have learned and all that I hope to explore with others who are seeking this peace, clarity and wholeness, yoga can offer.
FreeBodyYoga offers a variety of traditional practices, from Hatha, Vinyasa; Ashtanga yoga to breathwork; guided meditations; alignment & flow classes; helping each student practice their own unique form of yoga.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I had a friend visit from Jamaica and I planned us out a very nice time. We ate at Sunshine Restaurant on Memorial Drive. Pretty much all Jamaicans, we know Sunshine is the Spot! Shout out to the Chef Man! Then we enjoyed a night at a lounge in Duluth. We actually visited a couple because there were several on same street; where they played Afrobeats, reggae, oldies and some nice hip-hop vibes. Then later that week we enjoyed some NY Pizza from Pizza Man! On singleton And yes they live up to their name. Over the weekend, we enjoyed a fruits and veggies Festival at Tassidis in Atlanta we ate beautiful veggie wraps and met a lot of amazing people and danced the evening away to African drums and chanting.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I first and foremost want to give a Shout out to my beautiful family. My husband and 3 kids are my number 1 supporters. As a team we continue to sharpen eachother. My family keeps me grounded, discipline and energized! They have taught me countless lessons on love, patience and balance and never giving up! The two most powerful lessons I learned is that I am more powerful than any negative thought and I am free to choose in any situation.
